  4. Regional approachesare proliferating • NEPAD, IDRC, PHEA • AERC, Ushepia, AMMSI/AIMS, USAMI, NAS-BIO • World Bank Capacity Development/ Management Action Plan (CD-MAP)

  5. Some advantagesfor scientists and countries • Overcome professional isolation • Build critical mass • Exposure to multiple perspectives • Strengthen each participating node • Support multidisciplinary projects • Retain talented scientists

  6. Meetings shouldlead to action • PHEA Leaders’ Forum: ICT implementation grants • Carnegie-IAS International Science Initiative • Complement and leverage efforts of others • Emphasis on people • Extend principles of MSI

  7. Action plan • Planning/implementation workshop hosted by AAS • Planning by stakeholders from region • Demonstration projects (2008-10) • Administered and sustained by regional leaders
