  3. Welcome to High School What does a high school diploma do for you? 1) It helps you get a job 2) It helps you get into a college/university 3) It helps you earn financial aid/scholarships 4) It helps you join the military 5) Etc.

  4. High School Diploma • To earn a high school diploma in Fremont you must … • Complete 230 credits in specific subject areas • Pass the English CAHSEE and Math CAHSEE • Complete 40 Service Learning Hours

  5. What is a credit? • For each semester course you pass you will earn 5.0 credits. Credits can also be referred to as units. • To pass a class you must earn a D- or better. If you receive an F, you will fail the class, and earn 0.0 credits. • You need to earn 230 credits in specific subject areas to earn a diploma.

  6. College Grade Requirements • Most colleges or universities will require a C or above grade in your classes. Even though you will graduate with a D, it is best to strive for a C or above.

  11. What credits do I need? • You need to earn 230 credits in the following subjects: • English = 40 • Social Science/History = 30 • Mathematics = 30 • Science = 20 • PE = 20 • Visual and Performing Arts/World Language/Career Tech = 10 • Computer Ops = 5 • Health = 5 • Electives = 70

English = 40 credits • You need 10 English credits per year: • English 9 = 10 credits (Eng 9E, Eng 9A or Eng 9H) • English 10 = 10 credits (Eng 10A or Eng 10H) • English 11 = 10 credits (Eng 11A or Eng 11AP) • English 12 = 10 credits (Eng 12A, ERWC, or Eng 12AP) **A = College Prep, H = Honors, AP = Advanced Placement ***See your counselor if you are in ELL 1, ELL 2, or English 9E ****CSU/UC also requires 4 years of English (Area B)

Social Science/History = 30 credits • You need the following Social Science/History credits: • World History = 10 credits (CP or Honors) • US History = 10 credits (CP or AP) • Government/Economics = 10 credits (CP, Honors, or AP) **CP = College Prep and AP = Advanced Placement ***CSU/UC requires 2 years: 1 year of World History and 1 year of US History –OR- 1 year of World History, ½ year of US History, and Government (Area A)

Mathematics = 30 credits • You need 30 credits of Math from the following options: • Algebra 1 (CP) • Discovering Geometry (counts for math credit, but is not college prep) • Geometry (CP or H) • Intermediate Algebra (Algebra 2) (CP) • Trigonometry (CP) • Algebra 2/ Trig (CP or H) • PreCalculus (CP or H) • Calculus (CP or AP) • Statistics (CP or AP) ***CSU/UC also requires 3 years and recommends 4 years: Must include at least Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. More competitive colleges will look for high levels of math to even be considered. (Area C)

Science = 20 credits • You need 20 credits of Science: • 10 Credits of Physical Science • Integrated Science (CP) • Chemistry (CP, H, & AP) (Lab Science) • Physics (CP, H, & AP) (Lab Science) • 10 Credits of Life Science • Biology (CP, H, & AP) (Lab Science) • Anatomy (CP) (offered at ROP) ***CSU/UC requires 2 years of Lab Science: Biology and Chemistry (Area D) (A third year of science is recommended)

  16. Physical Education (PE) = 20 credits • You need 2 years of PE. We offer: • PE 9 • PE 10 • PE 11-12 ***CSU/UC’s DO NOT require PE

COMPARISON OF VARIOUS HIGH SCHOOL COURSE PATTERNS FOR GRADUATION AND COLLEGE ENTRANCE *Four-year colleges (UC and CSU) require a minimum of C or better to meet specific requirements. • **All courses must be UC certified and appear on the high school’s UC certified a-g list. At least 70 units of the 150 must be taken in your last two years of high school, with 11 of the 15 "a-g" courses prior to your senior year.

  23. What happens if you fail classes? If you fail a class, you will need to make it up in Summer School. If you fail more than you can make up in Summer School, you will need to attend night classes during your Senior Year on top of your summer school and regular school classes. If you fail even more classes you will need to transfer to Robertson (the continuation high school) in order to finish your diploma.

  24. What happens if I fail classes? • Example: If you fail English 9 Sem. 1 and Integrated Science Sem. 2 this year, you will need to attend Summer School to retake these classes. • You can only take 2 semester classes in Summer School. Each class is 2.5 hours long. Summer School is usually 7:30 – 12:50 pm and you only earn 10 credits. =( • Example: If you fail English 9 Sem. 1, English 9 Sem. 2, Integrated Science Sem. 2, and Health you will need to attend 2 years of Summer School to retake these classes. • This means you would need to attend the Summer after 9th AND after 10th grade. =( • If you fail even more classes you are looking at 3 years of Summer School and the possibility of also having to go to school at night during your senior year. • For example, some seniors are going to Kennedy from 8-3pm and then on Tues and Wednesdays they are in class at Adult School from 3:40 to 6:50 pm. =(

  25. What can you do to make sure you pass? • Attend classes every day and on time • Complete all class work and homework • Ask your teachers and family for help • Keep your parents informed • Stay organized • Manage your time • Stay healthy

  26. Testing????? • What tests will you need to take in High School? • STAR/CST Common Core State Stds • CAHSEE • PSAT • ACT • SAT

  27. STAR/CST’s • You will continue to take the California Standards Tests in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. • You do not have to take them in 12th grade!!! • Sometimes teachers will bump up your class grade if you do well on the CST of that same subject.

CAHSEE? • CAHSEE stands for California High School Exit Exam • The State of California requires you to pass an English and Math Exit Exam in order to receive a diploma. • You will take this test for the first time in March of your 10th grade year. • The English CAHSEE includes up to 9th grade English content. • The Math CAHSEE includes mostly Algebra content with a bit of Geometry included.

  29. PSAT You will be encouraged to take the PSAT in October of your 10th and 11th grade. This test is the Practice SAT and will provide you with information on what skills you should work on in high school in order to better prepare you for college and the SAT.

  30. ACT/SAT • Most four year colleges/universities will require you to submit an ACT or SAT score on top of having a good GPA. You only need to submit a score from one test, but many students choose to take both. Most students take the exam in the spring of their junior year. • ACT information is at www.act.org • SAT information is at www.collegeboard.com

  31. Service Learning Hours • You must complete 40 Service Learning Hours. These hours must be for a non-profit organization. • See the school website for ideas and forms. www.jfkhs.org (Click on Students then Service Learning) • See Mrs. Clark in Room 114 to turn in forms or if you have any questions.

  32. GPA (Grade Point Average) A Grade Point Average (GPA) is the average of your grades for any given period (a semester or total high school coursework). Each grade is given a value: A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 F = 0 **Colleges will give an extra point for Honors or AP courses.

  33. How is the GPA used? • Honor Roll • Athletic Eligibility • 2.00 or above with no F’s • Leadership • 2.50 or above • College Entrance • UC’s require a minimum 3.00 a-g GPA • CSU’s require a minimum 2.00 a-g GPA • Other Colleges/Universities vary • Grants/Scholarships

  34. How to Calculate a GPA Sample Report Card: Block 1 = B (B = 3) Block 2 = A (A = 4) Block 3 = C (C = 2) Block 4 = B (B = 3) Add the value for each grade and divide by the number of grades. GPA = 3 + 4 + 2 + 3 = 12 = 3.00 4 4

Types of GPA’s • Semester GPA: This GPA reflects just the grades earned for that semester. • Cumulative (Overall) GPA: This GPA reflects all the grades earned in high school. • A-G GPA: This GPA reflects all the college prep “A-G” courses taken in 10th and 11th grade. You can find a list of the “A-G” courses at www.jfkhs.org. On the website click on Support Services, scroll down and click on Career Center/College Information, then click on “a-g list” on the left hand side. **This list will change every year so be sure to check it annually. • Weighted GPA’s: Many colleges/universities will give you extra points in your GPA for Honors or AP courses. FUSD does not give extra points in the GPA for these courses.

  36. Athletic Eligibility • To be eligible to play sports in FUSD you must have… • a 2.0 or above GPA –AND- • NO “F” grades

  37. Athletic Eligibility - Probation • Probation is when a student has a GPA between 1.75 - 2.00 –OR- has at least 1 F. • For example: Joe has 2 A's, 1 B and an F. Even though his GPA is a 2.50 he is on probation since he has an F. • For example: Ann has 2 D's, 1 C and 1 B, she is on probation since she has a 1.75 but no F's. • A student can not be on probation for 2 consecutive semesters. In order to be off of probation a student must get above a 2.0 AND NO F's. • For example: The next semester Joe gets 2 A's, 2 B's and 1 C. He is off probation since he has no F's –AND- his GPA is above a 2.0. • For example: The next semester Ann gets 3 A's and 1 F, she is now ineligible because she got an F.
