What happened with England? • A war occurred because of the differences between the two nations. • Queen Elizabeth signed a treaty with the Netherlands (committed English soldiers) • Queen Elizabeth was declared a heretic against the church • The event that set off the limit was how Queen Elizabeth executed Mary, Queen of Scots. • Mary was planning a plot to kill Elizabeth

  4. What Happened with The Netherlands? • The Netherlands was a province of Spain during the time. • The religious battle were among the Dutch Protestants and Spanish Catholics • The Dutch declared the War of Independence against Spain • William of Orange lead the movement against Spain

  5. What happened with the Netherlands • 10 largely catholic provinces know to be know as Belgium today joined forces to the provinces known as the Netherlands now to oppose against Spain • Also known as the Pacification of Ghent • The Dutch soon became independent at the year of 1648

Religious Disunity • Spain and England had different points of view on many things involving religion and in the war, it ended up the Spanish vs. all of England’s religious Allies. • Their allies included France and The Netherlands. • Spain remained a catholic nation and fought along with the church against the protestant ideas spreading throughout Europe.
