Introduction • Energy Consumption is the largest controllable expense at most institutions. • NC has established the Sustainable Energy Building Efficiency Program which mandates the following • Energy Efficiency Standard for new construction – 30% reduction in energy consumption based upon ASHRAE 90.1-2004. • NC has mandated that all state institutions reduce their energy consumption on a square foot basis by 20% by 2010 and by 30% by 2015 from a baseline established in fiscal year 2004-2005. • All new buildings must be designed to achieve a LEED rating of silver.

Introduction • Our goal is to reduce all energy consumption – electrical, water, gas, and steam. • By achieving the energy reduction goals of the state of North Carolina NCCU will: • Save money for the North Carolina taxpayer. • Become better stewards of our environment. • Motivate and educate our students to become more environmentally aware. • As a first step we must accurately measure our energy consumption in a practical manner. We can’t control what we don’t measure.

  4. Previous System Electrical power and other utilities are read manually at meters located throughout campus. This method of data collection is time consuming and error prone.

  5. Previous System Electrical meters are located at each transformer on campus.

Previous System • Previous Energy Measurement Approach: • Manual data collection and entry • Various data storage files and displays • Energy data integrated into other campus reports • Energy use on campus is not readily visible • To administration, staff & faculty • To those who use it (students) • Disadvantages of this Approach: • Labor-intensive (expensive) • Slow • Cumbersome • Introduces error • Difficulty integrating into other reports • Less than ideal displays • Only Facilities Services personnel have energy awareness

Goals • Desired Approach for Energy Measurement & Reporting • Create campus-wide Energy Awareness • Automate all energy & utility measurement (meters) in real time • Automate all data collection (interrogation) • Automate all data entry and report generation (storage, displays) • Benchmark energy & utility consumption characteristics • On a facility level • On a department level • On an energy & utility type • Identify high energy & utility consumption in real time • Identify Energy Efficiency opportunities • Verify effectiveness of projects • Use energy & utility data to make financial decisions • Use energy & utility data to make operational decisions in real time

  8. Solution A wireless remote metering system designed in cooperation with Duke Energy that allows for the remote and real-time collection of energy consumption data. This system can measure electrical, steam, gas, and water consumption.

Solution • Advantages of this system of data collection • It is a Unique Solution • The service and cost are competitive in the marketplace • The service and cost are superior to self-performing • Utilizes a meter offering approved by the NC Utility Commission • Provides NCCU with an opportunity to participate in state-of- the-art technology installation with little or no risk • Requires little or no appropriated capital by NCCU to install equipment and provide the services • Provides access to Duke Energy’s knowledge of metering and on-line reporting • Delivers information in a manner everyone can understand
