HB - 2634 • History of the Horses: • Colonial Spanish Horse has been a part of the history of Arizona since 1540 and is a foundation horse for the American Quarter Horse and Paint Horse. • In 1540 - Francisco Coronado crossed Arizona on these horses. • Father Kino credited his success in building 22 missions to the stamina of these horses.

BH - 2634 • Current Status of the Horses: • 1971 - 1990 Colonial Spanish Horses discovered on the Cerbat Mountain BLM lands • Cerbat Horses blood typed and placed with private breeders. • 1989 - Colonial Spanish Horses discovered on the Wilbur-Cruce Ranch. • Wilbur-Cruce horses blood typed and placed at the Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum, and with private breeders. • The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy lists the Colonial Spanish Horses in a critical status. • The Colonial Spanish Horse in Arizona is one of the few unique horse breeds in the world.
