A combination of vlan access and mpls based ip core is scalable and efficient

Does not require MPLS-aware nodes near to the customer location

PE nodes still need to implement one virtual bridge per VPLS instance

Additional protection via MPLS Fast Reroute only between PE nodes – additional Ethernet protection mechanisms are necessary between PEs and CEs

Good scalability

full mesh of tunnel LSPs between PE nodes is still required, but the number of PE nodes is dramatically decreased

Services can still be carried over an IP/MPLS core network
