  1. Does a Connection or Relationship exist between the reactivity of a metal and when it was discovered? By: Sadie

  2. Connection • The earlier the metal was found the less reactive the metal. The more recent the metal was found the more reactive. • "BBC - H2g2 - Metals, Their Properties and Reactivity - a Beginners' Guide." BBC - Homepage. 11 May 2005. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A3935955>.

  3. Why? • Less reactive metals have been found earlier than more reactive metals because less reactive metals are easier to find than others. For example, Gold was found a long time ago because it is something that can be physically seen and mined. However more reactive materials like sodium can not be physically found without using more recently developed science and technology. • Due to more reactive metals not being so easy to dig up and find, a long time ago they didn’t have the technology and science to find these metals.

  4. Reactivity Series Potassium - K Sodium – Na Calcium - Ca Magnesium - Mg Aluminum – Al Zinc - Zn Iron - Fe Tin – Sn Lead - Pb Copper – Cu Silver - Ag Gold - Au Platinum - Pt What is the reactivity series? The reactivity series is the order of which metals cause the largest reactions and react with more things. Starting from the top is most reactive and the bottom is less reactive. This reactivity series doesn’t contain all the metals. It only contains the ones of which I did research on. "The Reactivity Series." Zephyrus Interactive Education Website. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://www.zephyrus.co.uk/thereactivityseries.html>.

  5. Potassium • Potassium was found in 1807 by Sir HumphryDavy. • Potassium is such a reactive metal that it makes it hard to extract potassium with out it reacting with the air. In order to do this they either electrolysis (passing and electric current) potassium or they react potassium with sodium. • "BBC - H2g2 - Metals, Their Properties and Reactivity - a Beginners' Guide." BBC - Homepage. 11 May 2005. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A3935955>. • Gagnon, Steve. "Questions and Answers." Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://education.jlab.org/qa/discover_ele.html>. • "Re: How Is Potassium Obtained or Extracted?" MadSciNet: The 24-hour Exploding Laboratory. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/1999-11/943199476.Ch.r.html>.

  6. Sodium • Sodium was found in 1807 by Sir HumphryDavy. • Sodium reacts with air and moisture, therefore when we extract sodium its more difficult than we think. In order to extract it we have to electrolysis. • "BBC - H2g2 - Metals, Their Properties and Reactivity - a Beginners' Guide." BBC - Homepage. 11 May 2005. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A3935955>. • Gagnon, Steve. "Questions and Answers." 7. Calcium • Calcium was found in 1808 by Sir HumphryDavy. • Calcium is obtained by passing electric currents through the calcium, so that we are able to get pure calcium. • "BBC - H2g2 - Metals, Their Properties and Reactivity - a Beginners' Guide." BBC - Homepage. 11 May 2005. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A3935955>. • Gagnon, Steve. "Questions and Answers." 9. Aluminum • Aluminum was found in 1825 by Hans Christian Oersted. • The electrolysis method is also used in extracting aluminum, just like most other highly reactive metals, this is because of how reactive they are, and what thy react with (mainly air and water). • "BBC - H2g2 - Metals, Their Properties and Reactivity - a Beginners' Guide." BBC - Homepage. 11 May 2005. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A3935955>. • Gagnon, Steve. "Questions and Answers." Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_is_aluminum_extracted_from_the_minerals_that_are_mined>.

  10. Zinc • Zinc was found in 1746. Although they don’t know who discovered Zinc seeing as it was found in the ancient times. • Zinc is extracted by mining sulfidic deposits. Sulfidic deposits always have zinc in them, therefore the sulfidic deposits are grinded up and the zinc is taken out from there. • "BBC - H2g2 - Metals, Their Properties and Reactivity - a Beginners' Guide." BBC - Homepage. 11 May 2005. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A3935955>. • Gagnon, Steve. "Questions and Answers." Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://education.jlab.org/qa/discover_ele.html>. • "Answers.com - How Is Platinum Extracted." WikiAnswers - The Q&A Wiki. Web. 10 Nov. 2010. <http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_is_platinum_extracted>.

  18. Conclusion • In my research I have found that the earlier that the metals were found the less reactive the metals, the more recently the metals found the more reactive the metals. This is because of the more recently developed science and technology which has allowed the discovery of more reactive metals. Though this pattern isn’t followed by all metals, Platinum was found in 1735 and is low down on the reactivity series.
