  4. This term our grade __class will take part in the ___________________Heritage Fair This will be integrated into our Literacy and Language Arts curriculum as we learn research skills, how to make jot notes and learn more about report writing Students will be given instruction on how to research and prepare a report/project

  5. Parental support may be required at various steps throughout the process Class time will be given throughout the next 6 weeks Students will be allotted marks for completing the weekly steps

  6. OURTENTATIVETIMELINE

  7. WEEK ONE • Introduction to Heritage Fairs • Discuss types of projects possible • Expectations for this project • Friday is the deadline for choosing a topic and deciding whether students will work alone or with a partner

  8. Week Two • Teach research skills using library, encyclopedias and Internet • Students will learn how to create a bibliography to keep track of all sources of information they collect • Students are expected to collect all of their information from a variety of sources by Friday

  9. Week Three • Teach students how to make jot notes to avoid plagiarism • Students will use the sources of information they collected the previous week to read and create their jot notes • Students are expected to complete all jot notes by Wednesday. They must bring all completed jot notes to class to show the teacher on this date • Students will learn how to expand their jot notes into sentences and create their written work • Students will use their jot notes to create a rough draft of their written report by Friday

  10. Week Four • Students will proofread and edit their written work • Students will make a good copy of their report from their rough draft by Friday

  11. Week Five • Students will learn how to create a presentation on a backboard • Students will work on their presentations • By Friday, students will have completed their report and display. They will have the Friday afternoon art time slot to work on completing their presentations

  12. Week Six • On Tuesday students are to come to class ready to present their Heritage Fair Projects to their classmates • Students will give an oral presentation (3 – 5 minutes) and be able to answer a few questions about their project and the format they chose • Students must submit a completed written report with a bibliography • On Wednesday please come out and admire your child’s work in the gymnasium at _____________’s School Fair

GETTING STARTED Get the latest news about the __________Regional Fair at:your e-mail and the Ontario Fairs program at www.ohfa.ca These websites will provide you with information about the Fair program as well as provide you with a list of Internet and Library resources to help you with your research

  14. PROJECTGUIDELINES

  15. Students may prepare projects as individuals or in pairs • Projects may be submitted in either one of the following formats: Static Display – or – Presentation/Performance • All projects must have a Canadian or Ontario history and/or heritage theme • Projects should entail some research (i.e. personal history, interviews, etc.) • Projects should be accompanied by written research undertaken by the student(s) in the course of developing the project

  16. The maximum size for any static display is 100 cm high x 150 cm wide; the dimensions of a commercial backboard are: 90 cm high x 120 cm wide. In both cases the distance between the edge of the table and the backboard should not exceed 80 cm • Presentations and performances must not exceed10 minutes in length • Only one student is allowed to accompany a project chosen to go to the Provincial or National Fair

  17. Possible Project Topics to get you started… • The personal history of a family member whose heritage has contributed to the development of the local region (cultural, economic, political or social) • The struggle faced by a multicultural group settling in a new area or the contributions of a specific ethnic group • The history of a particular business or institution (i.e. a local printing shop that is well-established in the community) • A local service group and how it came into being; the role it plays today • A major sporting event or historical event

Some aspect of a local or Ontario business (i.e. a day in the life of a worker in 1930 compared to today) • Local government • Background on a local park or arena • Profile of a local artist or performing arts group • A tradition such as a Winter Carnival and other Festivals • The history of a local hero

  19. DISPLAYCHECKLIST

  20. Title • easy to read • stands out / attracts attention • larger than other text

  21. Written Work • paragraphs MUST be typed • font is to be between 12 and 18 • double spaced is ideal • all paragraphs mounted with border or on colour paper • each paragraph should have a title easy to identify

Visuals: pictures, diagrams, maps, charts • at least 3 • mounted with borders • description written underneath explaining visual • visuals can be computer generated, hand drawn, or using photographs, cut outs • pictures are good teaching tools when they are directly related to the written work

  23. Layout • good use of space (not too crowded, not too empty) • colourful • tidy and well organized • unity of shape and colour (needs to be same shapes & colours used as borders) • your name and division (school, grade, age & region) in the bottom right corner - easy to see and read, not too big to take away from the display

  24. Props and Costumes • minimum of one object • object significantly enhances presentation • card explaining each prop / costume / food

  25. THINGS TO CONSIDER • Have an eye catching feature in your layout - something to catch the attention of audience • Family heirlooms and dangerous substances should be left at home – substitute models and/or photographs • Please let a teacher know if you will need electricaloutlets or equipment (TV & VCR) 2 to 3 weeks before the presentation day
