Workshop Goals • Identify faculty/student gaps in practices, programs & services • Active and Collaborative Learning • Student-Faculty interaction • Support for Learners • Academic Challenge • Learn about best practices from peer institutions • Begin thought process about intentionality to achieve our Vision for a Learning College • Note – today’s presentation is one slice of this rich data. We will continue to parse it in different ways over the next year, as we refine our QEP topic, & broadly implement some facets of our ATD plan.

  3. What is CCSSE? • A tool that helps us: • assess quality in community collegeeducation; • identify and learn from good educational practice— practice that promotes high levels of student learning and persistence; and • identify areas in which we can improve programs and services for students.

  4. What is CCFSSE? • The Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement is: • Web-based Instrument • Designed to mirror CCSSE to facilitate comparisons between student and faculty responses

  5. CCSSE Data Collection Process • A total of 679 credit students in 68 curriculum courses at the Main campus, NDC, and the OCSDC were surveyed in the spring of 2005. • A random sample of 68 courses was selected based on class start time • Excluded Courses:Noncredit courses Distance learning courses Lower-level Developmental courses Independent study courses Dual-enrollment courses - Huskins Bill classes - Dual-enrollment students under 18

CCFSSE Data Collection Process • A total of 169 full-time and part-time faculty members completed the CCFSSE in the spring of 2005 • Only faculty members teaching a course in the spring of 2005 were invited to participate • Faculty members received an e-mail invitation directly from CCSSE facilitators in March

  7. Comparison of CCFSSE & CCSSE • CCFSSE asks faculty members to respond based on a SPECIFIC COURSE they were teaching in the spring of 2005 • CCSSE asks students to respond based on experiences at THIS college during THIS (2004-2005) academic year

Rhodes State College (OH) – the early childhood education program students select and work with local community organizations that assist families. Working in small groups, the students interview the organization’s employees and undertake projects that benefit their selected organizations. This volunteer work is completed outside of the regularly scheduled class time. • Santa Fe Community College (FL) – to promote meaningful student-faculty-interaction outside the classroom, faculty offices are in interdisciplinary units that combine private offices with comfortably furnished common areas that become sites for review sessions, information advising, and intellectual discussions.

  26. Best PracticesStudent-Faculty Interaction • Tallahassee Community College (FL) – focusing on early engagement with students, faculty receive electronic rosters that include student photos. Additionally, each student receives a TCC e-mail address, and faculty are given student e-mail groups for each section they teach. • Valencia Community College (FL) – has a creativity course in which the instructor invites inspiring leaders to talk with students about channeling creativity into educational, career and life choices. In this course, the college president, for example, talked with students about using his own poetry and music in his quest for balance between life and work.

Best PracticesSupport for Learners • Housatonic Community College (CT) – academic advising is mandatory; students’ advisor must approve their course selections before they can register. • Sinclair Community College (OH) – serves many first-generation students who have trouble navigating the college system. All FT employees within student services attend 16 hours of customer service training per year. (Part-time staff members attend slightly less training).
