  2. LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES • to learn about the morphology of C. neoformans and its virulence factors • to understand main risk factors for developing infection • to be able diagnose Cryptococcal meningitis • to be able to act preventively

  3. Cryptococcus neoformans • Occurs worldwide in soil and in bird droppings • Prominent feature: thick polysaccharide capsule, which causes evasion from phagocytosis

  4. MAIN DEFENSE MECHANISMS AND PATHOGENESIS • T-cells responsible for defense • Cryptococcus reaches humans by inhalation of aerosolized yeast cells

  5. CHRONIC MENINGITIS IN AIDS-PATIENTS • The most important clinical syndrome • treatment: amphotericin B+/-flucytosine • recurrence prevention: fluconazole

  6. DIAGNOSIS • Specimen collection: CSF • Methods: • India Ink staining • Culture: SDA/25OC-370C/ 48-72 HRS Mucoid, cream coloured- off white colonies • Urease test,Phenoloxidase test, Growth on Bird seed or Niger seed Agar.

  7. EPIDEMIOLOGY OF CRYPTOCOCCOSIS Infection is always exogenous, is not transmitted from human to human
