Overview • Learn More Indiana – providing information in print, in person, through partnerships, and on the web to get more Hoosier to and through college. • A partnership of Indiana’s Commission for Higher Education, Department of Education, Department of Workforce Development, and the State Student Assistance Commission, with additional support from USA Funds, Lumina Foundation for Education and Indiana’s colleges and universities. • Additional opportunities to build and strengthen community involvement over the next two years provided by US DOE through the College Access Challenge Grant (CACG).

Student Survey Results 2008-09Indiana’s Annual Career And College Information Survey • Survey administered Oct/Nov 2008 • Center for Evaluation and Education Policy – IU scanned, assembled and analyzed data • Voluntary by school and by student • Input/feedback sought each year from high schools and colleges on ways to improve process/info gained • Informs schools, communities, & policymakers about student aspirations, perceptions and actions • Connects Indiana’s colleges and universities with our high school students

6. K-12 & Higher Education Participation • 72% of high schools returned completed forms for the 2008-09 survey. (347/483 schools). • 66% of 9th graders (class of 2012) participated in the survey. (59,394). • 57% of 11th graders (class of 2010) participated in the survey (47,299). • 58 of 70 public and private colleges and universities have submitted data agreements in order to contact students inquiring specifically about their institution.

Results - Getting Into College Good News • Over 75% of students believe they know what it takes to get admitted to college (tests, grades, applications, deadlines, etc.) Reality Check • Only 49% of 11th grade students & 40% of 9th grade students say they know where to find admissions requirements. • Only about half of students – both 9th and 11th grade – and only 1/3 of first generation college students – have visited a college campus.

Update: Indiana’s College Success Coalition • Recruiting members throughout the state • 14 regional coalitions • 700+ members • Average membership of 22 representatives from youth serving, faith-based, businesses, K-12 schools, higher education, organizations serving low-income and other underrepresented students and families. • 25 coalition meetings • 422 members received training during each meeting focusing on financial aid awareness & FAFSA videos • Key statewide/local events • Cash for College

19. Coalitions’ Efforts Have Helped… • FAFSAs filed by Indiana’s March 10 deadline—up 41% • Clean FAFSAs (no errors) filed—up 47% • College Goal Sunday attendance—up 57% • FAFSAs filed online at College Goal Sunday 2009—1,835 • College Goal Sunday 2008—878 (109% increase)

20. Local Coalitions’ Summer Events Northern Indiana • Wayne County – KnowHow2GO College Day at the Fair- June 25 • Corn, cows and college preparation at the 4-H Fair. College and university reps will guide students through the college admissions process while coalition members help students learn the steps it takes to get to college through the KnowHow2GOIndiana campaign. • Henry County – Twenty-first Century Scholars/LM Training – July 28 • Training for volunteers on Learn More Indiana and the Twenty-first Century Scholars application so they are ready to meet with kids and families during the fall Parent Nights and guide them to helpful tools. • Ft. Wayne – Spokesperson Contest – August-November • Goal is to find a high school student to produce financial aid Public Service Announcements (PSAs) through partnerships with the Fort Wayne Community Schools & local radio/TV stations.

Local Coalitions’ Summer Events Southern Indiana • Bloomington – College & Career Workshop – June 6, 2009 • Guest Speaker Jane Hoeppner delivered a motivational speech about pursuing higher education over breakfast to students & parents. Ivy Tech opened their doors to a public tour & coalition members held breakout sessions to teach the steps to college. • Evansville – The Bike Picnic – July 2, 2009 • Local organizations selected 300+kids based on character, academics, behavior, etc. to receive bicycles and safety gear. Coalition members will share KnowHow2GOIndiana & Scholar Info at picnic. • West Lafayette – Ivy Tech Night – June 29, 2009 • Overview of college admission requirements, financial aid presentation, introduction of college planning tools and resources, and a tour of Ivy Tech.

College Access Challenge Grant (CACG) Early Results • Statewide plan implemented to recruit 6th grade students into Twenty-first Century Scholars. • 1,500 enrollment tool-kits were sent to all Indiana middle schools and coalition locations. • Trained Scholars support staff in toolkit & pledge event • Trained Coalition members in pledge event • Learn More made intensive follow-up phone calls with schools • Early Results from 6th Grade enrollment • Currently an estimated 6,000 applications from the Pledge Event Process—double the amount received during a first-year enrollment. • More Hoosiers are accessing college & career information • Learn More Indiana Web site visits are up 33.1% from last year • 261,408 pieces of college going & completion information have been placed in the hands of Hoosiers across the state
