  2. Objectives • To link the 2009 crash data to 2009 hospital discharge and emergency department databases • Examples of Previous Data Linkage Project

  3. Proposed Data Linkage Project Emergency Department (ED) Crash Inpatient Hospital Discharge

  4. Rationale • The current individual crash database is limited since it does not contain the true outcome data, such as medical and financial items. • The linked database will be used to support local, regional and statewide highway safety decision-making to affect decreases in deaths, non-fatal injuries, and health care costs resulting from motor vehicle crashes.

  5. Brief Background on Data Linkage Program • Injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes is a major public health problem. • Injuries can be prevented, or reduced, if we understand their type, severity and cost. • Crash data alone do not indicate the injury problem in terms of the medical and financial consequences. • By linking crash data to their specific medical and financial outcomes, we can identify prevention factors.

  6. Example: Previous CODES Project

  7. 2005 Crash to Inpatient Linkage • 889,985 crash occupants • Linked to 5,235 hospital inpatient records • 6% of crash occupants admitted as inpatients in Illinois hospitals • Average hospital charge was $55,588 • Median hospital charge was $33,042 • Average length of stay was 7.0 days • Median length of stay was 4.5 days
