  2. Preliminaries • Construct a K-W-L chart about the caste system in India.

  3. Objectives: • The students will be able to engage in critical reading. • The students will be able to interpret an informational text by writing a persuasive paragraph about whether the application of the caste system would work in America.

  4. Focus Lesson: India’s Caste… • Preview: either individually or in small groups of 3, look through pages 5-9 of Boundaries magazine. • Use steps #1 and #2 of the analysis process we’ve been working with and write one sentence predicting the main idea. • Complete page 85 in their journals. (5 assessment pts.)

  5. Focus Lesson: India’s Caste… • Read: either individually or in small groups of 3, students should take turns reading pp. 5-9 of Boundaries magazine aloud using their “six-inch voices”. Pause after each page and evaluate how accurate your prediction is. Revise your sentence as necessary. • Reflect: complete student journal pp. 83 and 84.
