What is the O*NET System • It is a system that provides information such as: • The education or schooling required to obtain specific jobs • The skills and abilities needed to adequately do specific jobs • The salaries of different jobs • The type of people that typically do certain jobs
How does this type of information help students? • By researching different jobs, you are able to make decisions about the classes that you take that will better prepare you for the career path that you follow. • By knowing about different jobs you can begin to take the steps that you need to take in order to enter the field in which you are interested. • Begin to improve certain skills that are required by jobs that interest you.
How does *ONET work? • 1. Go to the website : http://www.onetonline.org/ • 2. In the upper right hand corner type the name of an occupation that you want to learn about. • For instance, if you type in “Welder” a list of jobs will come up. Click on the one you would like to research . Then, all of the information about that occupation will come up. • 3. You can them click on the different items that interest you such as tasks, tools & technology, knowledge, skills, abilities, work activities, work context, job zone, education, etc
What other jobs would you like to know about? • Note that although there are many jobs in this database, not every job is represented by the website • You can also search occupations through the “Advanced Search”. This option allows you to browse occupations by entering in information to learn the type of job that matches that information • For instance, choose skills from the drop down menu and then click on basic skills. Next, select mathematics. Occupations that require math skills will then be displayed.
