  4. What Applications? • Central v Distributed • Authentication, Personal ID, Authorisation • Who? Doctor, Teacher, Manager • E-Messaging, Home Banking, Shopping, Gambling, Credit Cards, Medical, Transport, ……. • Mobile E-Commerce, Own - Management (+Mobile) • Many more

  5. Biggest Obstacle for Introducing Electronic Signatures • Why? What Benefit/Overhead/Cost/Price? Alternatives: • Electronic ‘Contract’ - Handshake • Legal Framework - ‘Weight of Evidence’ • Cross Border Commonality of Process • Critical Mass • Strong Protection • Identity Transfer • Integration of Legacy Systems • Trust

  6. Standardisation Requirements • Plain Language Definition, Awareness, Acceptance • What is being Signed? • Object Identification

  7. International/Bilateral Recognition • The Market - with support from its friends - Many & Numerous - e.g. WTO, OECD, GII, UN

Some Conclusions • The technical infrastructure is fragmented but well developed in some areas • ...but it has not been properly fired in the implementation furnace • Responsibilities, liabilities, processes of CAs & RAs to be clarified & resolved • Still issues on expiry and long term assurances • Meanwhile: • practical application level protocol standards are being designed e.g. SET • Multi-function smart cards emerging
