  2. May 19, 1925 • From a family of 8 children • Mother was a homemaker • Father was a Baptist minister

  3. Because of his father activism the family was forced to relocate often • Many believe that Malcolm X got his passion from his father

  4. In 1929 their home in Michigan burnt down despite Louises efforts • Two years later Earl’s body was found layed across a set of train tracks. • Both incidents were ruled as accidents

  5. Louise suffered a mental break down a few years after the death of Earl and had to be committed to a mental institution • Forcing the kids to be placed in foster care

  6. Malcolm moved to Boston with his friend “shorty” • They were both convicted of burglary and faced 10 years in jail • Malcolm was granted parole after 7 years

  7. Malcolms brother introduced him to Elijah Muhammad. • Who actively worked to keep African-Americans empowering themselves and achieving political, economic, and social success.

  8. Malcolm changed his name to Malcolm X • The “X” signifies the loss of his tribal name • Appointed minister and national spokesperson for the nation of Islam

  9. Utilized newspaper, radio and television to convey his message

  10. Malcolm's faith was dealt a crushing blow at the height of the civil rights movement in 1963. When he learned that his mentor and leaderwassecretly having relations with as many as six women within the Nation of Islam organization.

  11. Shortly after his shocking discovery, Malcolm received criticism for a comment he made regarding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. • “never foresaw that the chickens would come home to roost so soon,"

  12. Malcolm went on a life changing trip to Mecca • Could share his thoughts and beliefs with many other cultures • "blonde-haired, blued-eyed men I could call my brothers." • His perspective had changed

  13. Resigned from his position in the state of Islam • Had a message for all races

  14. Had bodyguards where ever he went • in the Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom on February 21, 1965, three gunmen rushed Malcolm onstage. They shot him 15 times at close range.
