  1. Antithesis By NicOLAS W. Antaya 3rd hour AP Language

  2. What is an antithesis? The juxtaposition of contrasting ideas, often in parallel structure.

  3. In simpler terms… An antithesis places a part of a sentence against another to which it is opposed to form a balanced contrast of ideas. (such as describing something great with something bad)

  4. In further detail… An antithesis is best used in a sentence when you are trying to create a dramatic effect. -Patrick Henry This example makes “Liberty” stand out a great deal when compared to such a drastic opposite.

  5. Words from a man on the moon That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. -Neil Armstrong • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMINSD7MmT4

  6. Words from Lincoln "The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here." -Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

  7. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Even Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. thought it was a good idea to incorporate an antithesis into his famous speech. • "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.I have a dream today!“ • -Martin Luther King Jr. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V57lotnKGF8 @35 seconds
