Shhh- remember, composition books- please copy #1-4, then answer question#5: • 1.Deaf- “D”eaf refers to culturally Deaf, individuals who choose to identify with Deaf culture, pride in Deafness and ASL • 2.deaf- “d”eaf is a clinical/medical term that refers to the degree of hearing loss- a more severe or profound “loss” • 3.Hard of hearing (HH)- a term that many individuals with a range of hearing ability use to describe themselves- a culturally appropriate term (HH may also self-describe as Deaf). • 4.Hearing impaired- a culturally offensive term, used by the educational or medical community to describe the amount of hearing loss (less than “deaf”) • 5. Question: What are the 5 parameters of a sign (can you list them from memory? Then, check your previous notes and correct them ) • Finished? 5. ASL 2---Question 1-3: (just discuss in your group) • Have you ever felt discriminated against, called names, or just treated unfairly, especially when it mattered? Share a time if you will with your group, or at least consider it and then answer below: • How did that make you feel? • What is the most frustrating or upsetting thing in your life right now?

6. ASL 2- Now consider: • What if you could be guaranteed fairness and equality, and that what frustrates you the most to be gone, even for a while? • How would that feel?

7. ASL 2---High school is hard enough… • Ever feel insecure? All students do at some point. • Ever feel left out? • Do you want to make an impression, that you are a person of great character? • This is the time and place for that. • Never look down on someone just because they cannot hear- it is called Audism (racism against Deaf people)

8. ASL 2---How can you show strength of character, and cultural respect? • No voice/no sound- a Deaf-friendly environment • Not just for a grade, for an experience and to demonstrate respect • Maintaining a “voice-off” environment ensures no one misses out on any information- this is how you show fairness and that you are not trying to discriminate against others.
