  1. South Cambridgeshire Local Development PlanThe West Cambridge VillagesA Vision: 2016-2031 Coton [Barton Madingley Grantchester]

  2. Introduction • This vision paper is a joint document, agreed between the west Cambridge villages of Coton, [Madingley, Barton, and Grantchester]. • Its purpose is to set out the aspirations of these villages within the South Cambridgeshire Development Plan for 2016-2031, and should be read as part of that plan. • It draws on the respective Parish Council plans, links to which are attached as annexes. • The paper includes a joint vision for the (4) villages, followed by separate sections for each village.

  3. Summary • We want Cambridge to thrive as much in the next twenty years as is has in the last 800. • We want to protect the balance between town, village, and country • We want to invest in our environment • We want to invest in services and facilities for every age group

  4. Specific Recommendations (1) • The present limits of the West Cambridge City between Madingley Road and Trumpington Road should remain the city limit. • The four west Cambridge villages should be protected as distinct villages set in the countryside • Development in these villages should be locally driven and high quality, using infil sites, preserving the character of the villages

  5. Specific Recommendations (2) • Cambridge should make significant investment in sound reduction measures from the M11 • Cambridge should invest in environmentally-friendly transport, in particular, buses, cycle and walking paths between the villages and to the city, to reduce the need for car use. • Other …

  6. The environment • The environment is vital for present and future generations • Cambridge has largely managed to protect the division between town, village, and country, and should continue to do so • Cambridge has not well managed the side effects of development, notably noise and light pollution, and should do more.

  7. Development • Cambridge is thriving, and we have a joint interest that it continues to. • Unplanned unfettered development will damage, not support, Cambridge’s future • West Cambridge will support development that: • Protects the balance between town, village and country • Does not lead to sprawl • Is based on small, organic, individual, developments

  8. Services • Cambridge has a population healthily balanced across all ages • It needs to provide services to meet this wide demographic: • Improved cycle and walking paths between the villages and the city • Continued bus services • Village facilities for all ages

  9. The Villages. Recent History: The Good and the bad What we’ve done well What we haven’t Noise pollution from M11 Continued problems of speeding traffic Low quality housing developments Poor cycle links between the villages Litter has got worse, not better • Good cycle links from the villages to the city (except Madingley) • Thriving local entrepreneurs (Burwash Manor, Polhill) • Environmental projects (Coton Reserve, Madingley 800 wood) • Some individual housing developments

  10. Conclusion • This joint vision has been agreed by: • Date
