  2. INTRODUCTION MIXTURE SEPARATION

  3. STANDARD OF COMPETENCE / BASIC COMPETENCY Standard of Competency 3. Understanding the element, compound, and mixture. Basic Competency 3.5. Conduct mixture components separation with various methods based on physical and chemical properties.

  4. INDICATOR • Through simple experiment, students can separate the components in a mixture. • Based on understanding about the compositions of a substance and the properties of substance, students can create a mapping concept about substance.

  5. OBJECTIVE • Perform mixture separation. • Classify substance based on its compositions. • Classify substance based on its properties. • Create mapping concept of a substance.

  6. CONTENT • Filtration • Definition Mixture separation method based on the difference of size of substance particle. • Filtration is usually used to separate the mixture of solid and liquid substance • Example • Water purifying

  7. CONTENT • Filtration

  8. CONTENT • Evaporation • Definition Mixture separation method based on the difference in boiling point of substance. • Evaporation is usually used to separate mixture of solid and liquid substance. • Example: • Table salt production from sea water

  9. CONTENT • Evaporation

  10. CONTENT • Crystallization • Definition Mixture separation method based on the difference in boiling and freezing point of substances. • Crystallization is usually used to separate mixture of solid substances. • Example: • Process of purifying salt and sugar

  11. CONTENT • Crystallization

  12. CONTENT • Distillation • Definition Mixture separation method based on the difference in boiling point of substances. • Distillation is usually used to separate mixture of liquid substances. • Example: • Process of separating alcohol and water.

  13. CONTENT • Distillation

  14. CONTENT • Sublimation • Definition Mixture separation method based on the ability of substance to sublimes. • Sublimation is usually used to separate mixture of solid substances. • Example: • Process of making camphor and iodine.

  15. CONTENT • Sublimation

  16. CONTENT • Chromatography • Definition Mixture separation method based on the difference in spreading velocity of mixture components in a medium. • Example: • Process of separating colour, determine the level of air pollution, testing the contents of narcotics in our body.

  17. CONTENT • Chromatography
