In the beginning of the story Tom’s mom beat him because he wasn’t doing anything right he was being really bad and would not listen his mom asked him to paint the fence white and he said that he wanted it blue. • His mom is a real mean person. She doesn’t care about anyone but herself. Tom knows that he is going to get a beating so it doesn’t matter to him.
