  2. Instructions • The goal of the game is to maximise your wealth • You can buy gold, oil and shares using money cards depending on the prices shown at the start of each round • You can swap one or more cards for one or more other cards • There will be six rounds

  3. Ryman Healthcare • Biggest South Island company • Build and run retirement homes for the elderly • Strong demand for their services as our population is aging • Price affected by wealth and health of population, changes in house prices and changes to government superannuation

  4. Sky city • Own and operate a number of casinos around NZ and also in Australia • Price affected by income and employment levels, public attitudes towards gambling, access to other forms of gambling e.g. pokies in pubs, TAB etc

  5. Contact Energy • Second largest electricity generator in NZ after Meridian. Generates its power from geothermal, natural gas and hydro dams. • Price depends on weather and temperature, water levels in hydro lakes, price and availability of natural gas, competition from other power companies

  6. Auckland International Airport • Own Auckland Airport • Price depends on landing fees charged to airlines, number of planes and passengers landing at the airport, rent paid by shops who operate out of the airport buildings

  7. Skellerup • Famous in NZ for making gumboots but also make many other items used on farms • Price depends on how well farmers are doing, the export prices for milk, beef and sheep

  8. Restaurant Brands • Operate all Pizza Hut and Starbucks as well as most KFC’s in NZ • Price affected by income and employment levels, how confident consumers feel, competition from other fast food outlets.

  9. The Warehouse • Import cheap everyday household items mainly from China • Price effected by the availability of cheap imported goods from overseas, the amount of mark-up they can put on goods, level of income and unemployment

  10. Gold • Used in jewelry, electronics, computers, audiovisual cables and connectors, aerospace and dentistry • Also is seen as a safe investment because the price over the long term tends to rise because there will always be an unlimited want for it while it has a very limited supply.

  11. Oil • Used to make petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, lubrication oil, heating oil, plastics, cosmetics, fertilizer and some medicines. • Price depends on number of people owning cars / traveling, weather and temperature, amount of oil produced, how strong the global economy is.

  12. Round one • Each group should have $50 of money cards and one type of other cards e.g. Skellerup shares. • In round one you will begin trading your cards so that by the end of the round you have a range of different cards • You can by shares using money and the following prices or simply swap cards.

  22. News Flash • New research shows Kiwis are living on average 3 years longer than we used to • More people are installing solar panels on their homes. • Mad cow disease in Europe means more demand for NZ beef

Calculating your wealth • Step one = add up all the money cards you have e.g. $56 • Step two = multiply the number of share, gold, oil cards you have by the round 6 price e.g. 6 oil times oil price of $3 = $18 • Step three = add your money to the value of your gold oil and shares to find your wealth e.g. $56 + $18 + $27 + $20 + 38 = $159
