  1. A Step From Heaven An NaDecember 16 / 2002Realistic fiction Macie G. 7th period

  2. Setting • The story takes place in North America, in a small and cramped apartment. This adds meaning to the story by showing the reader all of the different challenges the family faced. If the setting was different, the book would be different because all the struggles that the characters had to face would not have occurred.

  3. Characters

  4. Conflict • A Korean family leaves their old lives behind to live in America. This conflict is man vs. society because the family must face new problems in America that they didn’t face in Korea.

  5. Summary of Plot • A four year old girl and her parents moved from Korea to America. They all had many challenges to face. The daughter had to learn to speak English at a young age. Both of her parents had to work two jobs to support their family. Will the parents be able to maintain their tiring jobs?

  6. Theme • A journey has its challenges and its rewards. • Text Evidence 1: A family moves from Korea to America. Page 23 • Text Evidence 2: The Korean family moved into a better home. Page 146 • Text Evidence 3: A six year old girl moved to America and had to learn English. Page 33

  7. Point of View • The point of view was through Young Ju’s eyes. The point of view was first person. This point of view shows the reader Young Ju’s thoughts and feelings through out the story. If the point of view was different, then the reader would understand Young Ju’s feelings and thoughts from a different perspective.

  8. Symbolism • The airplane that the family flew on symbolizes change. The airplane shows how the family must adjust to their new lives. It affects the story by showing the reader how the characters lives had changed.

  9. Recommendation • I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a beautifully written book. I loved the detail in this book. This book has a few surprises in it and a great ending. I loved this book because it showed all the characters thoughts and feelings through out the story.
