  2. BAY An inlet of a large water body that extends into the land smaller than a gulf.

  3. BUTTE A hill that rises abruptly from a flat area of land, with steep sides and a flat top.

  4. CANYON A deep narrow valley with steep sides often with a stream running through it.

  5. CAPE A point of land that juts out into water.

  6. DESERT An area of land, usually in very hot climates, that consists only of sand, gravel, or rock with little or no rain.

  7. GULF A large area of sea or ocean partially enclosed by land.

  8. HILL An area of land, usually rounded in shape, that is higher than the surrounding land but not as high as a mountain.

  9. LAKE A large body of water surrounded by land.

  10. MOUNTAIN A high and often rocky area of a land mass with steep or sloping sides.

  11. PENINSULA A narrow piece of land that juts out from the mainland into an area of water.

  12. PLATEAU an area of high ground with a fairly level surface

  13. RIVER a natural stream of water that flows through land and empties into a body of water such as an ocean or lake

  14. STRAIT a narrow body of water that joins two larger bodies of water

  15. SAVANNA a flat grassland, sometimes with scattered trees, in a tropical or subtropical region

  16. TUNDRA The level or nearly level treeless plain between the ice cap and the timber line of North America, Europe, and Asia that has permanently frozen subsoil.

  17. VALLEY A long low area of land, often with a river or stream running through it, that is surrounded by higher ground.
