  1. Spin behavior and critical length scales in epitaxial exchange-bias systems Kannan M. Krishnan, University of Washington, DMR 1063489 The spin behavior of ferromagnetic -antiferromagnetic bilayers in epitaxial exchange systems is both of fundamental and technological interest. We observed complex hysteresis behavior (lower figure) and developed a generalized, quantitative model to interpret it in terms of domain wall nucleation and propagation in the ferromagnetic layer [1]. Parallel and spin-flop couplings were experimentally found in different epitaxial systems, i.e. Fe/IrMn and Fe/MnPd, respectively. A uniquely large critical thickness, đťśą, ~ 30 nm (upper figure), for antiferromagnetic MnPd, was revealed by systematic measurements [2].
