  1. Skilled Trades 1201: Unit 2 Skills Common To All Trades

  2. So Far Thus, Thus So Far… • Unit 1 Apprenticeship and the Skilled Trades (6 hours) • Topic 1 Apprenticeship Program (1hour) • Topic 2 The Skilled Trades (1 hour) • Topic 3 Courses Common to all Skilled Trades (2 hours) • Topic 4 Focus on 6 Skilled Trades (2 hours)

  3. Unit 2 Overview The unit is organized into three topics. • Topic 1: Technology and the Workplace • looks at the nature of technology, technological literacy and capability, and technological processes. It relates these to the skilled trades and uses troubleshooting as an example of a technological capability.

  4. Unit 2 Overview • Topic 2:Reading Blueprints and Drawings • examines technical drawings as the primary communications tool for technical information in the skilled trades. It covers basic principles and applications in each of the 6 trades.

  5. Unit 2 Overview • Topic 3:Working in the Technology Lab • examines safety and personal rules of conduct from several perspectives. • Personal rules based on shop rules and practices • Strategies for team and individual activities • Materials processing • Tool and equipment usage

  6. Unit 2 Overview Assessment: This unit has a value of 20% of the course.

  7. Topic 1: Technology and the Workplace • Students will be expected to: • 2.01 define and describe technology as a function of knowledge, processes, and products [3.403]

  8. Technological Knowledge • Knowledge is not the same as information.  • Knowledge is understanding and interpreting the information and making decisions.  • Technological knowledge has different forms.

  9. Technological Knowledge • The basic form of technological knowledge is knowing how to do things. • This means knowing what to do, knowing when to do it, and knowing what to expect when you do something. • It also means building the technical skill to do it because this kind of knowledge is obtained mainly by doing things.

  10. Technological Knowledge • Skills are acquired by learning how to do something and practicing until you are proficient.  • When you have knowledge and skill with respect to performing some technological activity, we say you have that capability.  • This is, in fact, the foundation for technical expertise in any area.

  11. Technological Knowledge • Another form of technological knowledge is knowing technical facts and rules about how things function. • Generally people acquire this sort of knowledge as they need it.

  12. Technological Knowledge • A third form of technological knowledge is the type that lets us assess different situations and make decisions. • This means assessing different processes and strategies and deciding which is most appropriate. • Troubleshooting is dependant on this type of knowledge.

  13. Remember What We’re Discussing Today… • Students will be expected to: • 2.01 define and describe technology as a function of knowledge, processes, and products [3.403]

  14. Technological Processes • Technological processes are the 'doing' part of technology. • Technological activity uses all forms of technological knowledge.

  15. Fundamental Technological Processes • While there are many technological processes, some are considered to be the fundamental processes on which all others are built.

  16. These fundamental technological processes are: • communication processes of encoding/decoding, storing/retrieving, and sending/receiving of information. • managing processes of planning, decision making, etc. • control processes of sensing (that something has occurred), switching (things on and off), and regulating (continuously monitoring and adjusting)

  17. Fundamental Technological Processes Cont’d… • energy-power processes of conserving, converting, and transmitting • production processes of separating, combining, shaping, and finishing • biotechnology processes of growing, adapting, treating, maintaining, harvesting, etc.

  18. Remember What We’re Discussing Today… • Students will be expected to: • 2.01 define and describe technology as a function of knowledge, processes, and products [3.403]

  19. Technological Products • Technological products are one of the outcomes of technological activity.  • Technological products make up the human constructed world. • Technological products also include computers and networks, and software and other virtual environments such as the internet .

  20. To Conclude the Topic… • Technology has different aspects: • Knowledge, Processes, Products • Technology is how people modify the world around them. • Technology is a process (how we do things), the human constructed world (things that we make), and the knowledge and skills required to do those things.

  21. In Summary “Technology is human innovation in action that involves the generation of knowledge and process to develop systems or productsthat solve problems and extend human capabilities.” (Foundation for the Atlantic Canada Technology Education Curriculum)

  22. Very Mini Assignment • Go to the following website, and choose your favourite 3 designs: • http://designmuseum.org/design • Create a power point slideshow to display your top 3 choices. • Save this slideshow in your ST 1201 folder in your S: drive folder.
