  2. Aboutthecourse Acerca del curso Course Title: Written Communication Course Number: English 114 Credits: 3 Students in this course learn and apply basic principles of composition. They need to document the information, materials and references used for their works, applying the APA format. Special emphasis is placed on speaking, reading and writing. By the end of the semester, the students must write outlines, summaries and essays on topics related to the readings made. They will apply important grammar, punctuation and usage skills. A main objective of this course is that students write outlines and 3 to 5 paragraphs essays on topics related to the readings made.

Importancia de las competencias en el curso All professionals need to be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." Information literacy also is increasingly important in the contemporary environment of rapid technological change and proliferating information resources as the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of American Library Association, establishes. In order to write essays, at a college level, the students need to know how to access the right information, take notes, summarize , document and react to that information. This activity is designed to introduce and help the students achieve these goals.

  4. How does the activity created achieve the development of literacy competences? Cómo la actividad creada atiende las competencias The goal of this activity is to provide students with a framework for gaining control over how they interact with the information they have available, take notes, document and react to the information they gather. The professor presents and explains the instructions needed to complete the assignment.

How does the learning object designed respond to the development of literacy competences? • Cómo el objeto de aprendizaje atiende las competencias • Using a simple audio visual learning-object, theprofessormotivatesthestudents and gives them guidance and information needed to complete their work. The students will: • 1. Use the USC library resources to search for information related to the topic they have selected. • 2. Identify the value and differences of potential resources in a variety of formats (examples: multimedia, database, website, data set, audio/visual, books) to select six to work their annotated bibliographies • 3. Explore general information sources to increase familiarity with the topic • 4. Summarize each of the six references consulted. • 5. Identify each reference by writing its APA bibliography and the citations for all the information they plan to use for their essays later. • 6. React to the information gathered by writing comments and explaining: How do they plan to use the information later?

  6. How is the competencies development going to be evaluated? Cómo se evaluará el desarrollo de las competencias Create and apply a Rubric. The rubric will be the instrument use for the student’s self-assessment, the professor’s assessment and for the final evaluation of the work.
