  6. Preliminary conclusions (27 April 2005) • Zenith measurements successful (improved deep-space calibration) • Telemetry: up- and downlink: successful, but improvement needed for SCOUT • Various other changes (heaters etc.) worked excellent (tropics !!) • Despite various ‘logistical’ problems (extremely short preparation phase in Aracatuba) and inherent problems with clouds we have obtained good measurements at the time of the Envisat overpass. 2nd shutter for zenith measurements MIPAS-STR IMK-Seminar 7 Oktober 2005

  18. Summary (7 October 2005) • HALO: GLORIA-AB and POLSTRACC • Demonstrator : our contribution in-line with schedule • Preparation for the SCOUT-O3 campaign (Nov/Dec 2005) • Telemetry: up- and downlink : completed and tested • TC5 (for CHRISTA-NF and MARSCHALLS) • 2 successful test flights for MIPAS-STR • Data retrieval of the Aracatuba campaign • 17.02.2005 flight : profiles for CH1, work on CH2 in progress • 15.02.2005 flight : level-1 processing in progress MIPAS-STR IMK-Seminar 7 Oktober 2005

  19. ENVISAT Launch : 1 March 2002Chemistry Payload on ENVISAT: MIPAS, SCIAMACHY and GOMOSValidation of the ENVISAT measurements : ESABC (ENVISAT Stratospheric Aircraft and Balloon Campaign)Earlier validation activities : middle- and high latitudesFebruary 2005 : Validation in the tropicsAircraft: Bandeirante, Falcon and the Geophysica

  20. Motivation for validation in the tropics • Interesting region for science, thus accurate satellite data needed • Measurements from Satellite difficult because Low temperatures at the tropopause Relatively high vertical resolution required

  21. Why aircraft measurements for Envisat validation • Envisat is in a polar sun synchronous orbit • Equator crossing time : 10 and 22 hrs local time • Distance between two orbits about 3000 km • Aircraft can carry a large payload for - internal validation - measurement of complementary species

  22. Campaign base - Aracatuba - and approximate range of aircraft sorties. • The bold black lines show the area of operation. MIPAS-STR IMK-Seminar 7 Oktober 2005

  31. Conclusions • A – B : 28 limb scans (profiles); channel 1+2; 1st half with clouds below 13 km; 2nd half only clouds at the lower (8 and 9 km) tangent heights. • B – C: a few limb scans after the dive; channel 2 only; Thin clouds at the lower tangent heights (8 and 9 km); • C – A : 10 + 1 limb scans (in between non-linearity measurements) ; channel 2 only Thin clouds at the lower tangent heights (8 and 9 km) • Overpass 12:48 UTC at C “cloud free”

  36. Conclusions • During the complete flight clouds were in the field of view of the MIPAS-STR instrument and of course also in that of MIPAS-Envisat, except in the last section • The last section was cloud free even at the 8 km tangent point and will be extremely useful for MIPAS-Envisat validation

  37. Preliminary conclusions • Zenith measurements successful (improved deep-space calibration) • Telemetry: up- and downlink: succesful, but improvement needed for SCOUT • Various other changes (heaters etc.) worked excellent (tropics !!) • Despite various ‘logistical’ problems (extremely short preparation phase in Aracatuba) and inherent problems with clouds we have obtained good measurements at the time of the Envisat overpass. 2nd shutter for zenith measurements MIPAS-STR IMK-Seminar 7 Oktober 2005

  38. MIPAS-STR Schedule in Aracatuba • 05.02.2005: Arrival of the MIPAS-STR team • 11.02.2005: Arrival of the MIPAS dome and interface • 12.02.2005: Installation of MIPAS-ST • 13.02.2005: EMC and engine tests • 15.02.2005: First Envisat validation flight (7:18 LT !!)
