  1. Importance of Nutrition in Autism and benefits of Biomedical intervention in the management of Autismby Dr (Mrs.) Izuwah Doris25th June , 2011

  2. AUTISM • Autism, a neurodevelopemental disorder affects children‘s ability to • 1. Communicate/speak, • 2. Relate as a social being • 3.Play appropriately with toys and they also have various repetitive behavioural

  3. Secondary medical features • Seizures (-30 %+), • Cognitive deficits • Sensorimotor abnormalities • Savant skills • Immune impairments • Gastrointestinal distress (50-75%) • Food allergies (-50 %+)

  4. Biomedical intervention • Autism is a medical condition. • Possible predisposing factors are medically originated • Genetically influenced

  5. Predisposing factors • Heavy metal toxicity • Yeast infections • Overuse of antibiotics in infancy • Brain / immune dysfunction • Insufficient enzymes and food allergies • Environmental toxins insult and chemicals • Inability to process and remove toxins from the body ( methylation/ sulfation pathway )

  6. The biomedical approach is a science based molecular – biological approach to treatment in order to address the health issues of our children. • It is well documented that they often lack various nutrients, enzymes, anti-oxidants, and essential fatty acids, and that they require methylation support

  7. BIOMEDICAL TREATMENT • Diagnosis for your child • Specialized laboratory investigations • Supplements • Nutritional and dietary intervention.

  8. Nutritional and dietary intervention • Gluten free casein free diet • Specific carbohydrate diet • Feingold diet e.t.c

  9. GLUTEN FREE CASEIN FREE DIET (GFCF)? Does not contain gluten and casein.

  10. AFTER DIETARY INTERVENTION • Marked and significant improvements in behavior noted earlier • We are what we eat. • Allow your child to be happier, more alert, and healthier, sleep better, and much more.

  11. GFCF will not cure your child but will clear his mind to accept other forms of therapy • The maxim is “do all you can for you child but cause no harm”. • Better chance at integration into school and a brighter future • IT WAS A TURNING POINT IN THE LIVE OF MY SON.

  12. WHAT if it works • Do you owe it to your child and yourself to at least give it a try? • It should be done properly with the guidance of your trained doctor/personnel, • Will not harm your child. • Gluten and casein can stay in the body for as long as 6 months so if you give it a trial for 3-6 months and it did not work, you can stop the diet. • GIVE IT A CHANCE

  13. SO MOM, WHAT CAN I EAT - PROTEIN

  14. CARBOHYDRATE

  15. S

  16. Do not forget - INVESTIGATIONS Common lab findings include • Decreased = Zn, Mg, Ca, Fe, Vit A, B12 (increased methyl malonic acid), taurine, selenium, folate, EFA, NK cells, Vit B • Increased = Cu, Yeast/ bacteria metabolites, viral titer, Ig G antibodies to casein and gluten, auto antibodies, Heavy metals,

  17. Dietary intervention is a cornerstone of a Defeat Autism Now! Approach, and there is convincing empirical evidence that special diets/biomedical intervention help many with autism Biomedical intervention is so crucial in healing your baby’s mind and body so that your child will have the clarity of mind to learn in school and also be receptive to behavioural and speech therapy.

  18. SKIN ALLERGY

  19. SUPPLEMENTATION • Child might suffer the deficiencies made by their limited diet GOAL • Optimization of normal physiology-core of rebuilding, • Improve function of the immune system • Enhance cognitive abilities • Improve red cell membrane function which carries oxygen to the brain and helps sustain attention • Reduction of autistic behaviors • Helps heal Gastro intestinal functions,

  20. Boost the immune system , use Vitamins and minerals ,Fatty acids ,Probiotic and prebiotics , Digestive enzymes and Amino acids , Immune support ,Cognitive enhancers • Targeted treatment of constipation, diarrhea, sleep, yeast, clostridia sleep, hyperactivity, aggressiveness, bacteria and parasitic issues

  21. CLEAN UP THE DIET GFCF diet trial for 3-6mths Avoid sugar and refined starch, give high protein, high fiber diet, high good fats, maximize antioxidants, increase cruciferous veggies, garlic, turmeric and fermented foods. Limit processed and preserved foods, organic is best Avoid excitotoxins eg. caffeine, MSG, NutraSweet, red/yellow dyes, nitrites, sulfites ,glutamates preservatives,

  22. Limit intakes of phenols • Limit source of copper (chocolate, shell fish, tap water, artificial food dyes) • Drink plenty of filtered water • Never microwave in plastics or Styrofoam, do not store food in plastics or foil • Eliminate sea food if there is mercury toxicity

  23. Begin meals with raw fruits or veggies • Add good fat-coconut, olive, flax oil, avoid hydrogenated and trans fat • Buy hormone free, antibiotic-free, organic meat and eggs • Avoid genetically modified foods.

  24. CLEAN UP THE ENVIRONMENT Use natural biodegradable and perfume free detergents and cleaning agents. Avoid chlorine, use water filters, limit pool and hot tubs Wear 100% cotton clothes, avoid flame retardant materials (antimony) Use fluoride free toothpaste Eliminate exposure to HG

  25. Avoid prolonged exposure to batteries • Use Al free baking powder, deodorant, do not cook nor drink from Al cans and cups • Avoid use of herbicides or pesticides on lawns, gardens or home • Use natural shampoos, soaps and make up (lipstick Pb, foundation –Bi) • House plants like aloe Vera, elephant ear philodendron, English ivy, peace lily, spider plant, ficus – benzene, co, formaldehydeUse an air purifier esp. in the bed room

  26. JUST KNOW THAT ... • Ease your way in. Starting the diet isn’t easy, but you can do it. If your child is young, don’t delay. • Typically, younger kids adapt more readily to dietary changes and it’s easier to control their access to food.

  27. Thousands of parents throughout the world have placed their children on special diets and have observed dramatic improvements. • You can begin to educate yourself on these dietary options through your own reading and research

  28. Conclusion • Dietary intervention is a cornerstone of a Defeat Autism Now! Approach, and there is convincing empirical evidence that special diets/biomedical intervention help many with autism • Biomedical intervention is so crucial in healing your baby’s mind and body so that your child will have the clarity of mind to learn in school and also be receptive to behavioural and speech therapy.
