  1. Senior Parents & Students Class of 2014: What You Need to Know Senior Counselor - Dina Powis CCR Advisor – Narietha Carter-McClain Elkins High School September 17, 2013

  2. Priorities for Seniors • Preparing to Apply for College & Career Training Programs • Paying for College & Career Training • Continuing to work hard throughout your senior year – colleges CAN rescind their offers! Where do we start?

  3. Preparing for College & Career Training • Know your graduation plan – DHSP, RHSP, or MHSP • Know what your college requires for acceptance – do your research – be proactive! • Think about what you would like to major in (Senior Survey coming to English IV classes soon) • Rank/GPA • Complete a resume (CCR will be hosting a session soon) • Gather your letters of recommendation • Start essays now – get assistance/proofreaders and EDIT! Now is the time to be a perfectionist!

  4. Let the Search Begin • What are you looking for in a school? What will be the best fit? • Is a 2 year school or 4 year school the better choice for my student? Considerations: • Financial • Student’s maturity/Responsibility • How did my student fare in high school? Visit the campus!!! Look at not only academics, but surrounding area, amenities, dorms, etc.

  5. The Application process • Apply through: • www.applytexas.orgIn-state public universities • www.commonapplication.org – Public, Private, and some International • Print out your list of deadlines! If a deadline is missed, there are no second chances!

  6. Six Flavors of early Admit Restrictive Plans • Early Decision I • You commit to a 1st choice institution. • Early Decision II • Some college have two rounds of early decision. • Single-Choice Early Action • A few very select colleges restrict early action applicants to a single choice. Non-restrictive Plans • Regular Decision • Submit application at regular deadline, usually January and find out decision in mid spring. • Rolling Admission • Decisions made as applications come in. • Early Action • Apply early ( Nov. 1 usually), hear back early ( Dec. – Feb.) but not required to accept.

  7. Requesting Transcripts and School Reports • Request official transcript from the registrar. Please be aware of your deadlines as transcripts may take up to 5 days to process. • Most schools will require the counselor to submit a school report….please print a hard copy for my records and I will submit it electronically. Again, plan ahead and give me at least 5 days for letters or documentation.

  8. Greetings from your College & career readiness Advisor Narietha D. Carter-McClain, M.P.S.A. Fun facts: I Bleed Maroon (Aggie Alumni) I am the youngest of 8 children My favorite quote is: • “Education is Freedom!” My 2nd favorite quote is: • “If not you? Who?; If not now? When?”

  9. This Year’s Theme Who Wants to be a Millionaire? • This year’s theme for Elkin’s High School College & Career Readiness (CCR) • In 2002, a Bachelor’s degree-holder could expect to earn 75 percent more over a lifetime than someone with only a high school diploma. Today, that premium is 84 percent. • On average:

  10. Definition of College & career Readiness FBISD contends that College and Career Readiness encompasses academic, career, and Technical knowledge and skills that enable students to: • Enroll and succeed in credit-bearing, first-year courses at a post-secondary institution without the need for remediation; • Earn a high-level industry certification; • Gain entry-level employment in a high-skill, high-wage job; and/or • Enter military service through the branch of the student’s choice.

  11. Making Dollars makes Sense: Wasting Them Does Not • FBISD’s College & Career Readiness initiative not only aims to increase the number of students that technically meet CCR standards but also increase the number of students that actually enroll in and complete college and career training during high school and after high school completion • It has been the dirty little secret of higher education for decades: • Tens of thousands of college students can't do the work.  Developmental education — re-teaching basic skills in reading, writing and math — is a $200 million-a-year problem in Texas, funded by taxpayers, colleges and the students themselves. College Ready means no Developmental Ed., and therefore reduced double spending Being academically and organizational prepared for college and careers
