Filters

There are two main uses of these:

Low-pass Filters

These are very common and reduce the level of all frequencies above the cut off-frequency but let all of the frequencies below pass by unaltered. These can be heard on many dance tracks where the drum part begins sounding very muffled, and gradually becomes clearer and clearer as the song continues.

Exactly the opposite, lets higher frequencies pass through unaffected but cuts those below.

Compression

This is a method of squeezing the dynamic range of a signal by reducing the signal level above a use-defined threshold by a certain amount (ratio). The resultant signal is boosted so that the whole signal is perceived to be louder than before compression has been applied.
