  1. Labrador Straits Develops Cruise Industry • Labrador Straits is charting a course for success as a port of call in the North Atlantic cruise market Goals: To coordinate and maximize economic benefits from the growing cruise industry, Labrador Straits Development Corporation (LSDC) worked with the town of Red Bay to secure the resources needed to improve the town’s port infrastructure

  2. Red Bay, Labrador

  3. REDB Role: Labrador Straits Cruise Committee was established as a collaborative effort among site operators, municipalities, tour operators, business and local development groups (including LSDC) and heritage organizations • Focused on port readiness activities as outlined by Cruise Association of Newfoundland and Labrador’s (CANAL) Port readiness series

  4. Cruise committee began focusing in 2008 on preparing for the inaugural visit of the Holland America cruise ship, Maasdam, to Red Bay • This visit would set the stage for future visits by this and other similar cruise lines who had been previously visiting larger ports in Newfoundland and Labrador • The committee was challenged to meet the needs of this larger ship, as previous cruise visits to Red Bay had been smaller expedition cruises

  5. Outcomes: $290,000 was secured to improve port infrastructure at Red Bay and position the Labrador Straits as a port of call for the emerging North Atlantic cruise itineraries • A small portion of funding was allocated to marketing materials and promotion • A comprehensive workplan was developed to address the needs of the Holland America visit, as well as some long-term development goals for growing the region’s cruise industry

  6. Maasdam visit was huge success: • Approximately 1100 passengers and crew came aboard at some point during the eight hour visit • Some 314 passengers took part in shore excursions. • Passenger survey indicated 81% of respondents were Very Satisfied with the overall experience

  7. The Labrador Straits Cruise Committee has developed an ambitious strategic port readiness plan to accommodate future growth of the region’s cruise industry
