  3. Knowledge, • notpetroleum, • is thecritical resource • in the oil business The Atlantic Monthly Reliance Industries Ltd.

  4. India : Waves in Petroleum Exploration First Wave First Wave Second wave Second wave Third Wave Deep water spread both in east & west coast of India Deep water covers 43% of total sedimentary area

  5. Indian Deep Water : Myths those were……… XThere is no Oil & Gas in Indian Deep Water XNo Source Rock Potential XNo Reservoir Sand XNo Technology

  6. RIL Focusing on Deepwater Exploration • India’s largest private sector upstream company • Acreage equivalent to ~ 12% of India’s sedimentary basins Deepwater Acreage of ~ 288,000 Sq Km Domestic Acreage of ~ 343,000 Sq Km Betting on Deep waters with 84 % of total acreage

  7. Discoveries in Major Indian Offshore Basins • Krishna Godavari – Deepwater • 23 Discoveries to date • World’s Largest Gas discovery in its very first venture • Cauvery – Deepwater • Discovery in very first venture • Mahanadi • 7 Consecutive Discoveries • Gujarat Saurashtra • First discovery in carbonate reservoir Success is a result of our continued commitment

  8. RIL KG D6 Gas Field Deepwater an emerging exploration frontier Source : IHS Energy

  9. About US$ 90 Billion slated for investments over the next 4 years Deepwater Drilling spend to grow by 50% over the next 4 years Deep water investments on the Upsurge Source : Douglas Westwood

  10. Supply chain pressures-Deepwater Rig Availability • 100% utilization over the last 3 years-trend expected to continue over the next 2 years • DGH initiative-RMN report • Deepwater rigs not available until mid 2008. • Lead time for new builds is 3 years. • No Ultra deepwater rigs ( WD> 3000; 5 new builds in H2 2009. • Huge activity backlog to continue as long as oil > US$ 45 Deepwater Rig Market to remain tight Recommended for Surrender Relinquished Recommended for Surrender Relinquished Relinquished Recommended for Surrender Relinquished Recommended for Surrender Relinquished

  11. Average Annual Capex Outlay in Deepwater by 2012 to be about US$ 25 Billion per annum Deepwater Drilling spend to grow by 50% over the next 4 years Deep water investments on the Upsurge 50% Growth in Deep Water Drilling Source : Douglas Westwood Exploration and Production in Deepwater extremely Challenging

  12. Global Status : Milestone in Deep Water Exploration

  13. Deepwater Depositional System • Key Variables • Provenance • Relief • Climate • Shelf Width • Traps India

  14. East Coast Deepwater Basin

  15. East Coast Deepwater Basin Sedimentary Basins, East Coast • Starting from north to south: • Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin • Mahanadi Basin • Visakhapatnam Bay Basin • Krishna-Godavari Basin • Pennar-Palar Basin • Cauvery Basin • Gulf of Mannar 1 2 3 4 5 6 Structural Grain, East Coast 7

  16. Deepwater; East Coast of India Deep Water; East Coast of India “Amplitude Anomaly” Seismic signatures (bright amplitude packs) indicating time-transgressive sinuous channel system Stacked channel-levee-overbank complex with inter- channel area exhibiting differential reflection strength

  17. C4 C5 Deepwater; East Coast of India “Journey fromSeismic Log Image Rock” Rock Image Log Seismic Deep Water Processes Captured in Core

  18. Deepwater : Challenges Engineering • Low margin between pore pressure and fracture gradient • Sand consolidation • Multiple completion • Prevention of hydrate formation & preventive measures • Surface water flow • Surface loose gas sands • Flow assurance at various production rates including turn down conditions Geology • Sinuous/Braided channels • Channel avulsions • Vertical and lateral aggradations • Channel reworking • Confined to semi-confined to unconfined system

  19. Deepwater : Challenges Challenges “Super giant Discovery; Giant Complexities” • Heterogeneity of reservoir types and continuity • Irregular response to seismic attributes • Shallow gas hazards and water flows • Low rock strength leading to a narrow range between pore pressure and fracture gradient • Occurrence of gas hydrates • Engineering

  20. Deepwater : Technology Solutions Advanced Seismic data processing Before Processing After Processing DEEPER SEISMIC IMAGING: Reprocessing has brought out deeper section

  21. Deepwater : Technology Solutions Controlled Source Electro Magnetics CSEM can be used as another Direct Hydrocarbon Indicator

  22. Deepwater : Technology Solutions Visualisation Sweetness attribute displayed on a probe through the tertiary channel complex (co-rendered with semblance) Amplitude anomalies shown in a vertical seismic section Volume rendering used to delineate the deepwater siliciclastic system (labeled channel and splay 3D Visualization of different Seismic attribute volume can be helpful in defining Geological Model

  23. Deepwater : Technology Solutions Seismic Acquisition & Imaging Regional Geology & Basin Modeling Interpretationand Earth Modeling Advanced Drilling and Measurements Well Design & Simulation Reservoir Simulation and Characterization

  24. Deepwater : S t r a t e g y State-of-the-art technology Focussed Interpretation Intellectual capital/ Skilled Manpower Intensive-Iterative Workflow “Time intensive & robust workflow to solve complex exploration problems”

  25. Deepwater : S t r a t e g y TARGET Well Planning & Drilling To • Drilling of HPHT wells & usage of OBM • Adv. Pore Pressure Prediction & Interpretation • Real-time Data Transmission • High-end logging technology Interpretation, Visualization & TRACE Earth Modeling Reservoir • Advanced Volume Interpretation & Visualization • Geo-Modeling Characterization & Petrophysics • Petrophysics & Rock Physics • Attribute Calculation & Analysis Data Processing & Imaging Seismic Data • Advanced Seismic Processing • AVO, PSDM, LMR, etc. Acquisition • Deployment of 8 streamer acquisition vessels • High Resolution Seismic

  26. Final Words “4% of sedimentary basins of the world lie in India” “Production is only 0.9% of the world” “A huge scope exists in future E&P” “Deep Water will be the major focus” “Change fromCook BooktoOut of Box ” Technology – The Key Driver

  27. C h a n g e ……….. Be alert for the first sings of change Anticipate change even when things are going right. Do not allow routines to become chains. Keep renewing yourself. Change is the only thing that will never change . so better adapt to it

  28. My Passion……….. This conviction of our best minds that, little or no oil remained to be found, has continuously handicapped the search for oil. When no man any longer believes more oil is left to be found, no more oil field will be discovered. Today with the conviction that huge Deep Water potential exists, India will be a preferred hunting hub for future.
