  2. Street banners promote Sunnyside New banners are being installed on Tucson Blvd. These and banners on Campbell and 12th Avenue promote SUSD.

  3. Welcome, new administrators An open house was held September 6, 2011 at El Pueblo Neighborhood Center to welcome the district’s 15 new school administrators.

  4. Cindy Islas new Mission Manor principal Cindy Islas has been appointed as the interim principal of Mission Manor Elementary School, effective Sept. 6, 2011.

  5. Jennifer Valentine wins UA competition Jennifer Valentine, a third-grade S.U.N. Program teacher at Liberty Gifted and Talented Magnet Elementary School, is the first-place winner in the University of Arizona Center for Middle Eastern Studies eighth annual lesson plan competition. Her lesson, “Water in the Desert,” won the top award among entries from all over the United States. It will be posted on the Center’s website, and 1,000 CDs of lesson plans will be distributed to teachers throughout the nation.

  6. Dr. Isquierdo a Hispanic Heritage Month honoree Sunnyside District Superintendent Dr. Manuel Isquierdo is being honored by Cox Communications as part of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 – October 15. He will be featured in 30-second public service announcements on Cox channels during the month and will be profiled on Su Vida on Cox Channel 7. He will also be honored at an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game.

  7. Dr. Isquierdo nominated for Converge Yearbook Superintendent Dr. Manuel Isquierdo has been nominated for the 2011 Converge Yearbook Issue, a once-a-year recap of market trends and highlights of K-12 and higher education innovators.

  8. Dr. Isquierdo on Pearson panel Superintendent Dr. Manuel Isquierdo participated on a panel for Pearson that took place in San Diego in September 2011. The panel, which included Larry Rosen, author of “Rewired: Understanding the iGeneration and the Way They Learn,” discussed the use of technology in the classroom.

  9. Teacher Appreciation Supply Drive The Family Resource and Wellness Center invites Sunnyside District teachers to come to the center on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 3 - 5:30 p.m. to pick up school supplies. Coordinated by Tucson Values Teachers, a supply drive sponsored by The Community Finance Corporation, Walgreens, Raytheon, Vantage West Credit Union and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords collected more than 500 boxes of supplies citywide with a total value of $102,200. Fifty-one boxes were delivered to the Family Resource and Wellness Center for SUSD teachers.

  10. Gallery Exhibit by SUSD Art Teachers Nine Sunnyside District art teachers exhibited their work in the Art Teachers’ Art Exhibit sponsored by the Central Arts Gallery Sept. 3, 2011. Works by  Renee Bejarano El Onache, Lydia Campbell, Angela Casanova, Nancy Fish, Roberta Lewis, Carol Steffegen, Guy Taylor, Cathy Thomas and Randy Sue Trujillo plus S.T.A.R. Academic student Selena Gomez were on exhibit at Dinnerware Artspace downtown.

  11. Lauffer art exhibit at McDonald’s Gallery Works of art by students from Lauffer Middle School will be on exhibit in the McDonald’s Art Gallery for the month of September. The gallery is in the restaurant at 5225 S. Palo Verde Road. Lauffer’s art teacher is Renee Bejarano El Onache.

  12. S.T.A.R. artists in local exhibit Santos Montaño Joanna Martinez Roberta Lewis Art by S.T.A.R. Academic Center students Joanna Martinez and Santos Montaño, and teacher Roberta Lewis will be featured in the “Tikkun Olam” Art Show at the Jewish Community Center. The opening reception is Sunday, September 18, 1 – 4 p.m.

  13. Documentary preview Sept. 17 A free preview of the documentary, “Blue Devils: Pride of the South Side” will take place Saturday, September 17, 2011, 7 p.m., at Sunnyside High School. District videographer Reed Thompson produced the documentary on the Sunnyside High football team.

  14. Town Hall on proposed PCC policy A town hall presented by City Council members Richard Fimbres, Regina Romero and Karin Uhlich will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2001, 6 -8 p.m. in the Sunnyside High School auditorium to discuss the proposed changes to Pima Community College’s admissions policy. Tucsonans for Civility will co-host the event. Wednesday, September 14 6 – 8 p.m. Sunnyside High auditorium

  15. David Lloyd S.T.A.R. Academic teacher David Lloyd passed away on Sunday, September 4. Services will be held Saturday, September 24. The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to S.T.A.R.
