  1. Net-Centric Sensor Grids November 27 2007 Geoffrey Fox Community Grids Lab Indiana University

  2. Data Centric Enterprises • Distributed Science or eScience is modern research methodology linking electronically scientists, computers and data (instruments and sensors) • Uses Grid technology that is similar to that used for Web 2.0 systems like Flickr, YouTube • We use Cloud Computing from Amazon and soon IBM and Google • Google maps extensively used • DoD Anything Anywhere Anytime vision requires similar technologies needs similar distributed software systems for Command and Control • Requirements documented in Air Force FLTC (for example) • Approach defined by DoD Net Centric architecture • Implemented on Global Information Grid • Corporate Enterprise software uses service oriented architecture with similar requirements and goals

  3. The Team • Indiana University Information Technology Translational Institutes (IT)2 has three institutes • eScience (led by Community Grids Laboratory CGL) • Data Systems • Security • POLIS at IUPUI works on GIS with State • Anabas is a small company that has won three SBIR/STTR small business awards with DoD and DoE in collaboration with CGL • Ball Aerospace in Ohio provides DoD application expertise allowing Indiana University to focus on core (dual use) technology and civilian applications • Bill McQuay in sensor directorate of AFRL at WPAFB is current Anabas Phase II SBIR program monitor • Several civilian application partners

  4. Project Goal and Deliverables • Deliver a library of Grid Software modules supporting distributed data intensive systems for • Net Centric DoD Command and Control Applications • And related civilian applications • Earthquake and Weather Prediction and Emergency Response Grids • PolarGrid deploying Polar sensors and distributed analysis of melting of ice sheets • Navajo Nation Grid supporting education and healthcare in remote rural areas • Physics data analysis from accelerator in Geneva • Civilian applications leverage federal funding. Initial DoD work funded by SBIR Phase II involving Anabas, CGL and Ball Aerospace • This project will enhance civilian technology/applications and deliver DoD modules

  6. GPS Sensors and their Grid Analysis • Station Monitor Filter records real-time positions for 10 minutes and calculates position changes • Graph Plotter Application creates visual representation of the positions. • RDAHMM Filter records real-time positions for 10 minutes and invokes RDAHMM application which determines state changes in the XYZ signal. 8

  7. RDAHMM: GPS Time Series Segmentation GPS displacement (3D) length two years.Divided automatically by HMM into 7 classes. • Complex data with subtle signals is difficult for humans to analyze, leading to gaps in analysis • HMM segmentation provides an automatic way to focus attention on the most interesting parts of the time • Features: • Dip due to aquifer drainage (days 120-250) • Hector Mine earthquake (day 626) • Noisy period at end of time series

  8. Grid Workflow Data Assimilation in Earth Science • Grid services triggered by abnormal events and controlled by workflow process real time data from radar and high resolution simulations for tornado forecasts
