  2. WHY DO WE NEED A PROGRAMME? • Demand of more gender-sensitive statistics and indicators has continued to increase • Recent efforts while wide ranging are fragmented and isolated with limited impact • Need to create synergies among existing initiatives

  3. WHY DO WE NEED A PROGRAMME? (Contd..) • Better management of accumulated wealth of information and experience • Uneven and varied development among countries and regions

  4. OBJECTIVES • Effective use of networking • Building strong and supportive partnership • Establishment of collaborative arrangements at the national level

  5. THREE MAIN PROGRAMME COMPONENTS • Inter-agency and expert group to advance gender statistics at global level • Web Portal as technical information resource and channel for networking • Development of training courses for adoption and adaptation at all levels

  6. INTER-AGENCY AND EXPERT GROUP • Comprising representatives of gender statistics programmes of international institutions • To take stock, review progress challenges and emerging needs • Proposing action plans at the above levels • The IAEG-GS to be at the World Forum for gender statistics in Italy, December 2007

  7. WEB PORTAL FOR GENDER STATISTICS • Portal to be established as a primary tool for knowledge management • For sharing information, technical resources and data • Platform for disseminating statistics and indicators on gender issues worldwide

  8. DEVELOPMENT OF TRAINING COURSE MATERIALS • To strengthen capacities of NSOs • To produce gender-sensitive statistics • To satisfy different stakeholders • To be conducted in: • Targeted workshops and seminars • Short-term training programmes, stand alone or otherwise

  9. TECHNICAL WORKING GROUPS • Gender statistics and indicators • Web portal on gender statistics • Training curricula

  10. EXECUTION • The UNSD in collaboration with the World Bank and UNFPA (Steering Committee) • Project Secretariat to work closely with experts from NSOs, Regional Commissions, UN funds and programmes through relevant technical groups
