  2. Vocabulary vo-ca-bu-la-ry This first part of this unit has 12 words. Most of the words are broken up into syllables as we tend to say them. The underlined words are one syllable words. Learn each word’s definition and spelling.

  3. town Definition: A town is a group of houses, shops and buildings where people live and work. A town usually has its own post office, library, and school.

  4. work-er Definition: A worker is someone who does a job. A worker gets paid to do a job. These are different kinds of workers: police officers mechanics bakers fire firefighters teachers cooks construction workers painters housekeepers librarians gardeners

  5. news Definition: News is information about things that happen in a community. You can get the news from a television program, the radio, the computer or a newspaper.

  6. neigh-bor Definition: A neighbor is someone who lives near you. A neighbor can live in your building, or across the street. They live in your neighborhood.

  7. neigh-bor-hood Definition: A neighborhood includes the houses, shops, schools, and parks near your home.

  8. be-long Definition: If you belong to a group, you are a part of it. You belong to your family, your neighborhood, your class, and your school. You are a part of these groups.

  9. build-ing Definition: A building has walls, a roof, and a door. A building can be a house, a store, or a school.

  10. lo-cate Definition: When you locate something, you find out where it is. A map is used to locate places.

  11. map Definition: A map is a drawing that shows where things are. A map can show cities, states, and countries. A map can also show streets, parks, lakes, and mountains.

  12. firesta-tion Definition: A fire station is a building were firefighters wait until they are needed to put out fires.

  13. po-lice sta-tion Definition: A police station is a building where police officers work. Some police officers do paperwork. They can answer many questions about the law at the police station. At the police station, they can take your fingerprints.

  14. li-bra-ry Definition: A library is a place with books that people can borrow. A library also has magazines, DVDs, and CDs that people can use and return. There are computers at the library.
