Patriot Act • Passed as a response to the September to the September 11 terrorist attacks • Calls for increased government spending on airport security, financial reliefs for the victims of 9/11 attacks and provisions ensuring that charitable contributions made after attacks • Creates new ways in which the government can monitor individuals and obtain private information.

  3. Our Law Our proposed law is that the Patriot Act cannot allow search warrants without probable cause and can’t violate the 4th amendment.

  5. Court Case 1 • Court Case 1: Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project • Conflict: The HLP sought to provide to • foreign terrorist organizations. • Court Ruling: Supreme court upheld a • federal statute that bans support designated terrorist • organizations. • Precedent: US organizations and citizens teaching • Nonviolent methods of conflict resolution toward sanctioned • Terrorist groups could face criminal charges. • It supports our law because you cannot teach other terrorist groups nonviolent or violent acts

  6. Court Case 2 • Court Case 2: Mayfield v US • Conflict: Brandon Mayfield, American attorney, said that his 4th amendment was violated by the FBI. • Court Ruling: . Patriot Act’s dilution of probable cause allowed the Executive Branch to go around the 4th amendment • Precedent: two portions of the Patriot Act is unconstitutional • This supports our law because it allowed the Executive Branch to go around the 4th amendment.

Current Event 2 • Current Event 2: Reform the Un-American Patriot Act • FarhannaKhera, president of Muslim Advocates, released report say that the Patriot Act lost liberty of the US • Stated it would erode Americans freedoms • ACLU targeted mostly Muslims, South Asians, and Middle Easterners • How it supports our law: • It supports our law because Muslim groups are saying that the Patriot took the liberty out of the United States.
