Russian market for packaging production: segmentation by material

Paper, cardboard - 39%

Glass - 17%

Polymers - 36%

Metal - 8%

According to the evaluation of PRADO Marketing, European suppliers of packaging equipment dominate the Russian market with a 90% share. Among the leaders are Poland, Germany, and Ukraine. Ukraine is listed here mainly because it serves as a corridor between Europe and Russia. As for the market of food-processing equipment, Germany and Italy have the strongest positions in Russia, they hold 60% and 15% of the imports respectively.


Market Statistics. Import & Export.

Russian imports of filling and packaging machinery and systems for closing packaging and for labelling represented 267 million dollars in 2006, 413 million dollars in 2007 and 328 million dollars during the first 9 months of 2008 according to data supplied by Russian Customs. During the first 9 months of 2008, the main suppliers were Germany with 85.8 million dollars, Italy with 83.4 million dollars and Sweden with 13.9 million dollars. Russian imports of other packaging machinery, for their part, represented 256 million dollars during the first 9 months of 2008 (312 million dollars in 2007), of which 101 million dollars from Italy and 91 million dollars from Germany.

Dynamism in the sale of packing material in Russia is benefiting the sale of packing machines in the country. The market reached 960 million dollars in the year 2007, as compared to 888 million dollars in 2006 and 470 million dollars in 2005. The professionals of the sector are optimistic and expect the market to grow. The local production is not able to meet the rising demand, mainly because the local manufacturers neither have sufficient financial means nor the latest technologies to offer modern packing machines.
