  1. Taking the Fear Out of FCAT Feel like you might not be ready for the FCAT? YOU ARE…let’s just review a few items…today we will review gridding 

  2. 1. 2. 3. 5. 7.35 42% 6.11111 4. You have four minutes to complete gridding the numbers below

  3. / 4 2 . . 2 1 / 5 7 3 5 2 7 4 1 1 6 1 Don’t worry you will get it 

  4. To Conquer the FCAT Plan your “attack” • Know key words for the questions • Review the entire question including answers • Avoid common gridding mistakes • Practice using FCAT Reference Sheet • Daily FCAT vocabulary • Keep practicing your skills, X table, Fraction/Decimal/% conversion…fractions are a BIG part of it PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!

  5. Sunshine State Standards Mathematics Test Grade MC GR SR & ER 6 35-40 10-15 None 7 35-40 10-15 None 8 30-35 15-20 5-8 9 30-35 15-20 None 10 30-35 15-20 5-8 FCAT Question Formats and Approximate Number of Questions by Grade Level Operational Test has 50 questions

  6. Composition of released FCAT Test (6th Grade) 22-27% of questions are gridded responses for your FCAT

  7. Answer boxes Fraction bar Decimal point Number bubbles Parts of a Response Grid

  8. Filling in your Grids… • HINTS: • Do NOT leave a blank answer box in the middle of a question [do not leave a blank column in the middle of an answer] • Do NOT forget to write decimal points or fraction bars IF it is part of the answer. • Fill in one and ONLY one bubble for each box. Do NOT fill in a bubble under an unused box. • Fill in each bubble by making a solid black mark that completely fills the circle [color in the lines] • If the bubbles are not correct, your answer will not be recorded as correct.

  9. Reducing and Rounding Issues Reducing--- We recommend: Do not reduce fractions UNLESS the directions tell you to reduce to lowest terms OR if the answer doesn’t fit in the grid unless you reduce it. Rounding--- We recommend: Don’t round UNLESS the directions tell you to do so. 4 or less let it rest 5 or more add to the score

  10. Examples

  11. 6 6 0 0 OR Gridding a Whole Number 27 + 33 = 60

  12. . 0 .8 7 5 8 7 5 Gridding a Decimal or

  13. 3 / 5 Gridding a Fraction

  14. You can NOT write a mixed number in an answer grid. If your answer is a mixed number y you must convert it to: Ex: . 4 2 9 / 7 2 5 1 7 4 What to do with a mixed number... Improper Fraction Decimal OR

  15. INCORRECT Be aware…………………… 7 1 / 4 WHY?

  16. INCORRECT INCORRECT . 1 9 0 0 9 / 0 Gridding Percents What percent of 100 is 9? Answer: 9% 9

  17. Incorrect Gridding Repeating Decimals…….. Answer: 5.3333333 Correct

  18. Grid the answer 4.666666 OR

  19. Examples of Common Gridding Mistakes

  20. 6 3 / 5 3 6 5 The answer is Can you find the error?

  21. 4 2 0 5 Can you find the error? The answer is 25.04

  22. 3 1 8 The answer is 318 Can you find the error?

  23. 12.5 1 2 . 5 The answer is Do you see the mistake?

  24. 4 3 The answer is 43% Do you see the mistake?

  25. 4 5 The answer is 54 Do you see the error?

  26. . 3 7 What’s wrong? The answer is 3.66666666

  27. What’s wrong? 2 / 3 1 8 The answer is

  28. Summary of Common Gridding Mistakes • Adding extra zeros • Bubbling more than one number in a column • Adding unnecessary spaces • Forgetting to bubble • Omitting the decimal point • Gridding mixed numbers incorrectly • Gridding percents incorrectly • Adding extra symbols outside/inside of the grid

  29. On a mathematics test, Ken earned a score of 446 points out of a possible score of 500 points. What percent is equivalent to Ken’s score? 446 = .892 = 89.2% 500

  30. 360 x .28 = 100.8 or 28% - 12% = 16% 360 x .12 = 43.20 360 x .16 = 57.6 100.8 – 43.2 = 57.6

  31. MA.E.1.4.1 The following stem-and-leaf plot shows the hourly wages of a group of 25 workers are performing similar tasks but, because of differences in length of work experience and skill, are paid at different rates. What percent of the workers are paid less than $18 per hour? 14/25 = .56 = 56%

  32. Now it’s your turn to try it…

  33. Grid the following answers:(Solve first when necessary) • 6012.0.03 3.8/3 • 3.65 5.5¼6.7 – 2.3 • 7.8.666 8.What is 20% of 80 • 9. 6 + 3 x 510.7.333333 • 11.31/312.2⅜ • 13.4 is what percent of 16? • 14.12 is 20% of what number? • 15.Change 2¼ to a decimal.
