  6. Battle Plans • Broadcasts from Hanoi spoke of great victories • Troops moved into Khe Sanh area • Westmoreland reinforced area as well

  7. Khe San • January 21, 1968 • NVA attacks the remote base • Operation Scotland

  8. The attack • North Vietnamese bombard the base with a massive artillery attack • The artillery hit the base ammunition stock • The shelling went on for days, turned into an artillery fight

  9. Supplying the base • Americans relied on C-130 Hercules Transport • These were used until one was hit

  10. Super Gaggle • Americans attacked enemy guns with fighter planes • Helicopters followed and dropped supplies • Took less than five minutes

  11. Strain of the siege • Constant shelling took its toll on men • Food was limited • Knee deep mud • Rats

  12. Saigon • Capital of South Vietnam

  13. Trenches and tunnels • NVA began digging trenches to try and breach Khe San • They came within 1200 yards of the camp • Only way to destroy them was bombing from B-52’s

  14. End of the Siege • Bombings turned the battle around • Siege lifted after 77 days • Khe San based destroyed by Americans in June of 1968
