Definition of Sustainability Common definition: “Sustainable development is one that meets the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their own needs” Covers two key concepts: Needs by others (maybe less fortunate) should be given an overriding priority; and The idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs.

Sustainability is Transition • From • short-term thinking • an economy outside of nature • a linear flow of resources • fossil fuels only • Seeing environmental, social and economic challenges as separate and competing • To • long-term thinking • an economy integrated with nature • a systems’ flow of resources • Integration of alternative fuels • Seeing environmental, social, and economic challenges as an interconnected whole energy

Thinking out of the Box – Think Systems System: a set of interdependent or temporarily interacting parts • In Systems: • Everything is connected to everything else • It is hard to do just one thing • Nothing grows forever • There are no simple solutions • When there are serious imbalances, don’t fight positive feedback and support negative feedback • Competition is often cooperation in disguise
