  1. Hutto ISD: HB 5 This presentation is provided to help educate the Hutto community on how Texas House Bill 5: Endorsement Plans- are currently being implemented.

  2. Background Info The purpose of the State’s change to the new graduation plan is to provide students greater flexibility and choice in the selection of courses that will best prepare them for their individual postsecondary goals. Employers, Higher Education Professionals and leaders in the Texas workforce have encouraged career oriented training and certification at the high school level to help meet their growing demands.

  3. New Changes: Beginning Spring 2014, all 8th graders will be required to choose one of five endorsements as outlined in the new graduation plan. The five endorsements are: • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) • Business and Industry • Public Services • Arts and Humanities • Multidisciplinary Studies

  4. High School Counselors have meet with 8th grade students and presented them with the 31 Programs of Study (pathways) offered at Hutto High School. These pathways (coherent sequence of courses) are organized by career clusters within each of the Endorsements. A career cluster is a grouping of occupations and broad industries based on commonalities.

  5. Why 31 Programs of Study? • This is based on the idea that the education of the 21st century should combine rigorous academics with relevant career education. • When schools integrate academic and technical education, students can see the “relevance” of what they are learning. • Pathways allow students to study a particular field in depth and help to facilitate a seamless transition from secondary to post-secondary opportunities (College Readiness).

What is College Readiness? • College and career readiness can be defined as the level of preparation necessary for students to enroll and succeed—without remediation—in entry-level, credit bearing general education courses.   7. What is Career Readiness? Career readiness involves three major skill areas: • core academic skillsand the ability to apply those skills to concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and in routine daily activities; • employability skills(such as critical thinking and responsibility) that are essential in any career area; • technical, job-specific skills related to a specific career pathway. These skills have been emphasized across numerous pieces of research and allow students to enter true career pathways that offer family-sustaining wages and opportunities for advancement. Program of Study Defined • “A Program of Study is a comprehensive education plan designed to support college/career readiness through strategic alignment of high school academic, technical, and enrichment courses fostering multiple postsecondary options tied tostudent interest.” • It is a comprehensive plan because… • “Programs of study identify extended learning experiences including work based learning , to support curriculum, and encourages valued added components such as earning credentials, earning college credit in high school, and participating in community related opportunities.”
