  4. Citing Short Quotations In the novel, Huck admits, “Please take it," says I, "and don't ask me nothing – then I won't have to tell no lies” (Twain 19). * Note the COMMA before the quote.

  5. Long Quotations If your quote is over 2 lines long in your paper, you must cite it differently: • Indent the quote using the “tab” key and single-space the quote (highlight only the quote and change the spacing). • You do NOT need quotation marks. • You must introduce the quote with a sentence that ends in a comma or semicolon. • Your period goes BEFORE the parenthesis at the end of the sentence.

  6. Long Quotation Example Huck reveals his racist tendencies through his narration: It most froze me to hear such talk. He wouldn't ever dared to talk such talk in his life before. Just see what a difference it made in him the minute he judged he was about free. It was according to the old saying, "Give a nigger an inch and he'll take an ell." Thinks I, this is what comes of my not thinking. Here was this nigger, which I had as good as helped to run away, coming right out flat- footed and saying he would steal his children – children that belonged to a man I didn't even know; a man that hadn't ever done me no harm. (Twain 82) Through this quote Huck shows that…. * Note the INDENTION of the quote.
