Some Warnings for Popular Pain Medications After two days of testimony, the Food and Drug Administration's drug safety advisory panel voted 19-10 to recommend that products containing hydrocodone—a category that includes Vicodin--should be reclassified as Schedule II controlled substances, along with other narcotic painkillers such as oxycodone. Hydrocodone products are currently in Schedule III. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16,500 people died after overdosing on opioid-based painkillers in 2010, the most recent data available. Narcotic Pain Meds - It's the biggest man-made epidemic in the United States. The most common scenario, he said, involves a man in his 40s or 50s who visits a doctor with a backache and walks out with a pain pill prescription. About three years later, typically, the man dies in his sleep from taking too many pills, or mixing them with alcohol. They don't intend to die, but more than 20,000 times a year -- every 19 minutes, on average -- that is exactly what happens. Some Warnings for Popular Pain Medications If you take Tylenol for four days as directed you may be at risk of liver damage, says a new study. Medical News Today July 5 2006 The FDA's Matthew Ray Holman, PhD, says the new warnings are necessary "to raise consumer awareness about the potential for liver damage when using acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) and the potential for stomach bleeding when using [a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug]," commonly called an NSAID. Some More Warnings- Anti – Depressants for Pain?? Cymbalta (duloxetine) is an antidepressant used for the treatment of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that causes widespread muscle pain and tenderness, trouble sleeping, and overwhelming tiredness. Cymbalta belongs to a class of medications called serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). The FDA previously approved Cymbalta for the treatment of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain. The agency approved Cymbalta for the management of fibromyalgia in adults in June 2008. A similar medication, called Savella (milnacipran), gained FDA approval in early 2009.
