NEGOTIATIONS • In 2004 the UN secretary general met with the Sudanese government - following the talks there was a joint agreement to stop the conflict. • Since then various peace deals have been signed and then broken between the fighting groups. • The UN continue to be successful in getting both sides to the negotiating table. PEACEKEEPING FORCES • After UN negotiations (and the threat of sanctions) with the Sudanese government, a small peacekeeping force (approx 300 troops) was allowed into Darfur in August 2004 • In 2009 15000 were in place. • They have had some success in protecting civilians although they themselves have come under attack from both sides on several occasions.
