The Problem • The British exercised a lot of control over the colonies. • England ratified laws that prevented the colonist from living free and independent lives. • Many colonist citizens felt stifled. • The restraints England's parliament created put a damper on how the colonist made money and how they survived. French Indian War (1754-1763) • The British and the French fought over the land in America. • This started in 1754 and lasted until 1763. • The war was referred to as the “Seven Year War.” • A lot of Indians fought on the side of the French. • Of course the colonists fought along side the British. • In the end ,the French lost the war. • France lost Canada and all of the French territory east of the Mississippi River except New Orleans. • The French War help the colonist realize they no longer needed the British Army for protection. Sugar Act of 1964 • The Sugar Act of 1764 that put a three-cent tax on foreign sugar. • This increased the cost of other goods such as: coffee, indigo, and wine. • It prohibited imports of rum and French wines. • This affected the colonist who owned shops selling these goods. • Again, the colonist were not informed about these taxes.

Proclamation of 1764 • In 1763, a royal decree was issued it prohibited colonists from establishing or maintaining land west of an imaginary line running near the Appalachian Mountains. • This act helped England: • control the colonist interactions with Native Americans. • And prevent the colonist from moving west. • This was another attempt from England, to control the colonies.

  17. Stamp Act (1765) • The British government, made all American colonists pay a tax on all printed paper. • Like: legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, cards, and any other paper used for print. • The money collected by the Stamp Act was used to help pay defenses for the American border near the Appalachian Mountains • Colonist interpreted it as a direct attempt by England to raise money, using the colonies, without the approval of the colonies legislators. • The colonist felt that they were being taxed without Representation, and they would continue to be taxed with out representation.

  18. Townshend Act of 1767 • Charles Townshend, Chancellor of the Exchequer, wanted to strengthen the British governments control over the colonist. • He persuaded Parliament to pass a chain of laws creating new taxes for the colonists to pay. • These laws included special taxes on lead, paint, paper, glass and tea imported by colonists.

  19. Tea Act of 1773 • The Tea Act of 1773 was a law that forced all Americans to by their tea from the East India Company. Thus allowing, the company to monopolize and exploit the colonist . • The American colonists saw this law as another way of "taxation without representation.“ • The colonist couldn’t buy tea form any local stores They couldn't buy tea from any local merchants because they would be charged extra.. • This was the situation in Boston that led to the Boston Tea Party.

  20. Quartering Acts of 1774 • The Quartering Act was an act passed by British Parliament. • The 1765 Quartering Act was passed to ensure that British soldiers were being properly cared in the colonies. • Colonist were forced to provide housing, food and drinks for British soldiers. • The colonist were not getting paid to take care of the soldiers • The colonist were offended because they were not given a choice, again, and if they did not comply there would be consequences.

  21. Quebec Act of 1774 • In 1774 Quebec Act was passed by the British Parliament . • It gave the French Canadians complete religious freedom and restored the French. • The Colonies were upset because this act abolished many of the Western claims to the province of Quebec and part of the Ohio and Mississippi River.
