  1. BE/BI Consolidation Plans 2014-2019 Rhodri Jones Consolidation Day – 12th September 2013

  2. Work foreseen in the LHC #1 • BPM System • Rack cooling for surface electronics • Approved CONS • 420kCHF in 2013/2014 to be completed during LS1 • Consolidation of standard BPM system for 2023+ (RISK SCORE 8) • Existing system will be 20 years old • already low on some spare components • Need to develop new electronics to install in LS3 or shortly afterwards • Current system took 10 years from conception to installation • Cost estimated at ~6MCHF • if solution can be found to replace only electronics (i.e. no re-cabling) • Production costs needed from 2016 onwards • Not yet included in CONS or HL-LHC

  3. Work foreseen in the LHC #2 • BLM System • LHC BLM dismantling & remounting for LS1 • Approved CONS – 670kCHF in 2013/2014 • Development of rad-hard electronics • Required to move front-end closer to detector to counter noise on cables • Some detectors in LHC LSS have quench level close to noise level at 7TeV • Approved CONS – 250kCHF in 2013-2015 • LHC BLM consolidation for LS2 (RISK SCORE 8) • Replacement of threshold comparator cards • These have issues with the optical receivers, leading to spurious dumps • 2 options with first preferred by BE/BI • Complete replacement of surface electronics with new digital acquisition system • Also allows implementation of more robust firmware design • Would allow additional BLM functionality not possible with today’s system • Pre-empts replacement of these cards probably necessary in LS3 • COST estimated at 1MCHF 2014-2018 (bulk in 2015-2016) • Replace only mezzanine cards keeping existing digital acquisition cards • Whole system would still need replacement by LS3 or sometime thereafter • Would double amount of work required • Initial cost 300kCHF 2014-2015 with additional 1MCHF in 2018-2023

  4. Work foreseen in the LHC #3 • VME Fan Replacement(RISK SCORE 10) • Replacement of power supply fans (LS1) & main fans (LS2) (already underway in PH) • COST 200kCHF 2014 & 200kCHF in 2018 (only identified issue in BI this week) • Consolidation of Fast BCT System • Development of new transformers with less position dependency • Required for fast beam current change monitor & for better calibration • Approved CONS : 200kCHF in 2013-2015 • BGI System (RISK SCORE 4) • Need replacement cameras (radiation damage) • COST 200kCHF 2014-2016 • Current system only useable with ions (as designed) • for protons needs new magnet system for installation in LS2 • Estimated COST 1MCHF 2015-2018 • Decision depends on performance of new BGV monitor • Head-Tail System (RISK SCORE 6) • Important consolidation essential to fulfill requirements for understanding instabilities in the LHC • New readout acquisition system & RF front-ends • COST 400kCHF 2014 – 2016 (increase in cost & duration)

  5. Work foreseen in the PS Complex #1 • Ongoing consolidation • Wirescanner & SEM electronics completed next year • BLM electronic consolidation ongoing • This code should pass to LIU as part of wider BLM upgrade programme • Beam Current Transformer consolidation nearing completion • Additional 100kCHF required for LINAC 3 • Currently available in 2015 – would like to advance to 2014 • Mechanical Spares for Critical Injector Complex Monitors (RISK SCORE 8) • Much equipment more than 20 years old • Technical Fellow collecting information during LS1 • Identify main components & proceed to procure necessary parts • Recent example • 30+ year old PSB ceramic chamber developed leak with no spare available • Expertise to manufacture such a unit no longer at CERN • INITIAL COST 300kCHF 2014-2016

  6. Work foreseen in the PS Complex #2 • Stepping Motor Renovation(RISK SCORE 4) • Over 100 such motors installed in the injector complex • Controlled by outdated MIDI system • Only spares come from LEP & are quickly running out • Complete renovation of controller electronics proposed • COST 100kCHF in 2015 • BTV Electronics Renovation (RISK SCORE 4) • Replacement of outdated acquisition for new digital cameras • COST 300kCHF in 2015-2016 • LEIR Electron Cooler (RISK SCORE 10) • Only one spare electron gun and no spare collector • If vacuum leak develops on any of these elements then the ion run (LHC and fixed target) will be seriously compromised • COST 150kCHF in 2014-2015

  7. Work foreseen in SPS-NA • Replacement of MWPC by GEM Detectors (RISK SCORE 4) • Multi Wire Proportional Chambers require regular repair of wires • Tricky & time consuming • Not possible to make new chambers • Wire winding machines no longer operational • Gas Electron Multipliers successfully replaced MWPC in AD • GEM Prototypes to replace MPWC in SPS-NA already tested • COST 200kCHF over 2014-2016

  8. Work foreseen in the AD #1 • Requirements studied in detail & summarised in • https://edms.cern.ch/document/1159784/2 • AD Orbit System (RISK SCORE 6) • Currently has single read-out channel for all pick-ups • Read-out based on expensive , outdated network analyser • Proposal to replace with same system being developed for ELENA • COST 250kCHF in 2014-2015 • Additional 100kCHF required with respect to initial estimate • AD BCT System (RISK SCORE 6) • Refurbishment or replacement of all 4 monitors • Electronics & irradiated toroids • COST 200kCHF in 2015 • Installation of Cryogenic Current Comparator for replacement of obsolete DCCT • Allows current resolution down to the 10nA level • Collaboration with FAIR (GSI) starting • ESTIMATED COST 250kCHF 2014-2016

  9. Work foreseen in the AD #2 • AD Electron Cooler (RISK SCORE 10) • Dates from ICE  many components over 30 years old • No spares exists for the magnetic elements • Issue with toroid would put cooler out of action for a year • 2 Options: • Construct a new state of the art cooler for the ELENA era • incorporating: • adiabatic expansion of the electron beam • electrostatic deflectors in the toroid sections • new position pick-ups for the alignment of the beams • COST 2.5MCHF over 2014-2018 • Manufacture a spare of each magnetic element • gun solenoid, collector solenoid and toroid • COST 380kCHF in 2014-2015 • Option 1 preferable for BE/BI if AD to run reliably for ELENA

  10. Summary • BE/BI Requests 2014-2020+
