Background • Hal Plotkin • Keynote speaker at Zero Textbook Cost Degree Summit, College of the Canyons in September 2018 (3 attendees from MJC: Cheryl Chavez, Ashli Bumgardner, and Iris Carroll) • Hal uses personal experiences to communicate importance of OER and ZTC on student success • Senior Open Policy Fellow at Creative Commons • CC helps creators (instructors) to share their work freely using licensing to protect their ownership • Discusses Open Educational Resources (OER) used in place of textbooks to create Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) courses/degrees

Purpose of Event • Working toward building an awareness and support for OER • To answer: Why ZTC? • Eliminates textbook cost • Students start first day of class with all materials necessary for success • Financial aid could be used for other educational and living expenses • Instructor rights to edit OER content for accessibility that publisher content does not typically allow

  5. March 29, 2019 Introduced OER Faculty Liaison, Shirley Miranda Introduced the importance OER and ZTC 17 participants live, 11 via Zoom Video online potentially reaching campus wide Faculty Impact

Student Impact • 25.5% of MJC students (4,631) currently offered ZTC • 18,148 MJC students enrolled in credit and non-credit courses at census as of Spring 2019 • 125 ZTC courses offered in Spring 2019 • 59% of MJC students receiving financial aid as of Spring 2019 • 56.9% Hispanic • 3.7% African American • ZTC has room to grow. Hoping that ZTC can positively impact this 59%.

Looking Forward • OER faculty liaison - Shirley Miranda Brenes • Joined the OER Commons groups for webinars and learning to use OERCommons.org, a public digital library of OER • Instructors currently working on OER • Chris Briggs and Gretchen Leuenhagen using OER for thematic units in Reading 184 and posting to Canvas Commons
