  2. FL Graduation Requirements Do you need to take an online course? Do you need a PE credit? Do you need a fine arts credit? Not if you complete the IB Diploma Programme Requirements!

  3. Scholar Designation Highest FL high school diploma awarded Algebra 2 and Statistics or equally rigorous course (IB Math) Chemistry or Physics + equally rigorous course 1 credit in AP/IB/AICE/DE Passing scores on the Geometry, Biology, and US History EOCs (or passing AP/IB scores) 2 credits in same world language

  4. Merit Designation Attain 1 or more industry certifications from your career academy Must fulfill all requirements and pass your industry certification exam

  5. PSAT 8/9: Preliminary SAT Register for an account at CollegeBoard.org! You will take the PSAT again in 10th grade for more practice In 11th grade, your scores may qualify you for scholarship money You will also take the SAT for college admissions in 11th grade Study material and practice available for free on Khan Academy

  6. Earning Credits (non EOC Courses) You will earn 1 credit a year for each class you pass with a D or higher. Credits are earned 2 times a year with a ½ credit per course awarded each semester. 1st semester (December) 2ndsemester (June) Additional credits may be earned online (FLVS) or via dual enrollment.

  7. Semester GRADING (non EOC Courses) To receive a passing grade for the semester, you must pass 2 of the 3 grades used to calculate the semester average. Final Exams count for 20% of your semester grade. If you are absent 11 days in a class, you MUST pass the final exam! Block periods counts as 2 absences. 1st period counts as 1 absence. Only the final semester average goes on your transcript. Colleges do not see quarter or exam grades.

  8. EOC Exam Courses • Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, US History • You will take a computer-based end of course (EOC) exam in April or May • If transferring in EOC credits from a private or out-of-state school, you must take the EOC (Algebra 1 only) but will keep the grade you already earned. • FLVS students must take the EOC and the chart below applies. • If taking an EOC course now or in the future, you will receive 1 full credit and 1 final grade in June:

  9. Incompletes If you have missed assignments and/or tests due to absences, you may earn an “I” grade for a quarter or exam. When you have an “I”, the transcript grade defaults to an F. You must fix Incompletes as soon as possible. It is your responsibility to make arrangements with your teacher(s). Once the work or exam is completed, your grade will be changed.

  10. How is GPA/CAA calculated? Letter grades are given a number value A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 F=0 GPA/CAA = Total Points ÷ Total Classes GPA = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43 CAA* (Core Academic Average) = 17 ÷ 5 = 3.4 *You must maintain at least a 2.4 CAA each 9 weeks. You need a 2.6 CAA at the end of 9th to continue in MYP 10th grade.

  11. Cumulative GPA Includes all semester and yearly grades from high school credit courses (not quarter or exam grades). Cumulative GPA changes twice a year. After 1st Semester After 2ndSemester EOC courses are factored into GPA after 2nd semester only

  12. HPA – Class Rank • HPA is calculated by giving extra weight to MYP/AP/AICE/IB/Dual Enrollment courses. • MYP (honors) – 1.125 x the normal weight • AP/AICE/IB/Dual Enrollment – 1.5 x the normal weight • HPA determines Class Rank – Highest HPA is #1 in the class

Grade Forgiveness • Any semester grade of a D or F, or middle school grade of a C may be retaken for grade forgiveness. • Both grades remain on your transcript but the old grade is removed from GPA/HPA calculations, while the new grade is factored in. • You can take honors level courses on FLVS to forgive an MYP/AP/AICE grade and boost GPA/HPA.

  14. Tips for MYP Success! Keep a detailed agenda/planner and review it daily. Organize notes/handouts/homework for each class. Manage your time wisely; figure out a schedule that works best for you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Get help early and as often as needed!

  16. What are some examples of effective study strategies??? Study in groups; discussion enhances understanding and recall. Explain concepts to others (friends, neighbors, parents). Practice (math problems, essay writing, etc.) Remember to keep your studying ACTIVE! Avoid falling into the trap of just reading over your notes or the book.…again.

  17. What should I do if I’m struggling? Ask questions in class…there are no stupid questions!!! Ask your teacher(s) for extra help…many are available before/after school or during lunch. Search for online resources, videos, apps, etc., for example, Quizlet or Khan Academy. Attend after school tutoring: see next slide for the schedule See your counselor. DON’T wait until the week of report cards to get help! DO take responsibility for YOUR education!

  19. Planning for College: 9th Grade Earn good grades…everything counts but CORE academic classes are the most important! Get involved in extra-curricular activities. Explore your interests; try different extra-curricular activities and community service opportunities. Start researching schools online: CollegeBoard.org Individual university websites

Bright Futures Scholarship IB Diploma Recipients Students who complete the IB Diploma Programme curriculum WITH 1290 SAT (reading/math) or 29 ACT (composite) IB Career Programme students must meet the 3.5 GPA requirement along with the above test scores. 100 community service hours (MYP and IB require 225 total) The current Florida Academic Scholars (top award) amount covers 100% of tuition + fees at a FL public school or a portion of FL private school tuition. Students also receive $300 per semester for additional expenses (books). The Florida Medallion Scholars award covers a portion of tuition (3.0 GPA, 1170 SAT/26 ACT, and 75 community service hours).
